The University of Alabama A-Day football game will be held at 2 p.m. on April 20 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will be televised live on ESPN2. Click here for a list of activities. Parking and traffic will be similar to a regular football game-day weekend. Beginning midafternoon on April 19, traffic will be restricted on Colonial Drive at University Boulevard to essential service traffic only. The following parking areas must be cleared by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 19: northeast stadium lot, northwest stadium lot, Wallace Wade lot, Rose Administration area and lot, communication-card lot, Colonial Drive south of Eighth Street, Capstone Drive and the easternmost part of the northeast Campus Drive lot. Re-entry to all faculty and staff lots, with the exception of the Ferguson deck and the north Ferguson-MIB lot, will be restricted after 5 p.m. Parking for orange residential permit holders will be available in the Tutwiler lot. The Triangle lot will also be available. Click here for a map that shows the parking-lot closures. Roads and parking will reopen as soon as possible after the game concludes.
The University will manage all campus mail service following the closure of the U.S. Post Office in the Ferguson Center at the end of the semester. The current post office space in Ferguson will be renovated and will open as the Student Mail and Package Distribution Center this summer. The center will handle all student mail and packages, departmental mail and all other mailing options that are currently available with USPS. Students will be able to rent a mailbox and receive USPS, UPS and FedEx items at that location. In addition, computers will be available for students, faculty and staff to go online to ship items by UPS or FedEx. These packages will be accepted at the mail counter. The new center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Additional information will be posted at http://www.campusmail.ua.edu in the coming weeks. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
The National Alliance for Mental Illness, UA chapter, will hold officer elections today at 7 p.m. in 351 Gordon Palmer Hall. Positions up for election include president-elect, vice president, secretary, treasurer, public relations, support chair and awareness chair. Any student who is passionate about raising awareness for mental illness can attend the meeting and give a brief description of why they are qualified for a position. EVENTS
Students are invited to a financial literacy fair April 10. The fair will be held on the second floor of the Ferguson Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April is Financial Literacy Month, and the purpose of the fair is to promote financial literacy among college students and connect them with financial literacy professionals. Students will receive a financial passport and be asked to visit all of the tables. Completed passports will be entered into a raffle for prizes. In addition, there will be 15-30-minute workshops about general money management and budgeting, credit do’s and don’ts, taxes and salary negotiations. Students are invited to join the Community Service Center Wednesday, April 10, for the Sleep Out on the Quad to promote awareness of homelessness issues that exist in Alabama and across the nation. The event begins at 8 p.m. on the Quad in front of Lloyd Hall with a panel discussion featuring representatives from Habitat for Humanity, the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center and the Jesus Way Homeless Shelter. Other activities include a trivia game, watching “The Pursuit of Happyness,” and a walk around the Quad without shoes. Students must furnish their own sleeping bags and plan to leave the Quad by 6 a.m. on April 11. After the event, the project will be listed at http://slpro.ua.edu for students to log their service hours. Students who stay overnight will receive up to 10 community service hours. United will host a benefit concert Friday, April 12, at the Capstone Church. Featured performers are Robby Earle and Emily Reid. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the homeless in Tuscaloosa. Any donation will be considered the admission fee. Requested donations include shirts, canned foods, blankets, socks, hygiene products and other related items. A celebration to highlight the progress that The University of Alabama has made toward diversity will be held April 15 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Center ballroom. Free food, activities and performances will be available. Performances include a black-history skit, acappella singing, Japanese drumming and a martial-arts demonstration. These are just a few of the great performances. University Programs, the Black Student Union, the Association of Residential Communities and the International Student Association are hosting the event.
The Women’s Resource Center’s Student Leadership Council and Alpha Psi Omega theatre and dance honor society will host a reading of Eve Ensler’s award-wining play, “The Vagina Monologues,” at the Ferguson Center Theater April 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go toward ending violence against women. Tickets are $5 for students, $8 for faculty and staff, and $10 for the general public. Tickets may be purchased by phone at 348-5040 or at the door.
The Student Alumni Association, along with FATE, is hosting its first 5k on April 21. Proceeds benefit local organizations. The race will start at the Student Recreation Center at 11 a.m. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided at Alumni Hall after the race.
