UA’s Stone Wins National Faculty Merit Award

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Mary Stone, director of the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at The University of Alabama, has been awarded the Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA)/Joseph A. Silvoso Faculty Merit Award for 2012.

“Winning an award named in honor of Dr. Silvoso, who founded the School of Accountancy at the University of Missouri in Columbia, which was the first at a major state university, is especially meaningful to me,” Stone said.

Silvoso, who died in 1998, served on the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants board of directors and as president of the American Accounting Association.

The intent of the award is to recognize and reward an outstanding faculty member, teaching in a post-baccalaureate program offered by a member school of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy. FSA promotes and supports accredited graduate programs in accounting to achieve and maintain public trust in the accounting profession.

“Kudos to Dr. Stone,” said Dr. J. Michael Hardin, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce. “This is the highest award given by the Federation of Schools of Accountancy. Dr. Stone has a long and distinguished academic career in accounting and has been a strong supporter of high-quality accounting education for many years. She has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and service, and she richly deserves this recognition.”

Stone is a past president of the American Accounting Association. She is also a member of the  AICPA Accounting Standards Executive Committee, the AACSB International Accounting Accreditation Committee, and the Board of Trustees of the Accounting Hall of Fame.

Stone was presented with a plaque commemorating her service to the Federation of Schools of Accountancy and a stipend for $2,500. This award is funded annually by a contribution from the KPMG Foundation.

The honor was announced at the recent Accounting Program Leadership Group/Federation of Schools of Accountancy joint conference in San Diego.
