UA Graduate Programs Rank High

Some UA graduate programs are ranking at the top of the list, according to “U.S. News and World Report’s” 2014 edition of its annual “Best Graduate Schools” publication. The UA School of Law is ranked 21st in the nation and the UA School of Library and Information Studies is ranked 18th. Alabama’s Master of Business Administration program comes in at 58th among all MBA programs.

Pan-STARRS comet will be visible in western sky tonight

University of Alabama astronomy professor William Keel says he’s bringing out the heavy hardware for tonight’s public sky viewing of the Pan-STARRS comet. “We should have a whole range of 5- to 20-inch aperture telescopes,” for the viewing from 7:30-8:15 tonight at Moundville Archaeological Park, he said Thursday. He said the telescopes, at least four of the largest in UA’s astronomy department, will give viewers a good look at Pan-STARRS, which is passing within 100 million miles of Earth on the newly discovered comet’s first voyage through the solar system.

Civil rights-era photos spur book about fateful year 1963

Several years back, an intern working at The Birmingham News uncovered a dusty treasure trove of iconic images from the civil rights movement: dogs and firehoses trained on marchers, Bull Connor in all his terror. The box of photo negatives was marked “Keep. Do Not Sell.” Most of the images had not seen print, and didn’t until the 21st century. … Birmingham News reporter Barnett Wright, author of “1963: How the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement Changed America and the World,” spoke about his book, which publishes some of those previously unseen images, along with stories from foot-soldiers of the movement, as the keynote speech of “Discerning Diverse Voices: Symposium on Diversity” at the University of Alabama on Thursday. About 50 students, faculty and journalism professionals attended the talk in Room 205 of Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library.

‘Migration’ exhibit shows effects of movement

The Paul R. Jones Gallery’s exhibit “Migration,” on display through April 19, showcases art that illustrates the effects of mass movements of people to different locations. The exhibit features works from the permanent Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art. The collection is made up of 1700 pieces valued at $5 million, which were donated in 2008 by Paul R. Jones, an Alabama native and collector of African-American art. A committee of University of Alabama faculty, made up of members of the Black Faculty and Staff Association, wanted to exhibit works that were relevant to a variety of different disciplines.

ESPN SportsCenter anchor Mike Hill to speak at UA March 20

The University of Alabama Program in Sports Communication will hold its first academic research symposium Wednesday, March 20, with ESPN SportsCenter anchor Mike Hill as the keynote speaker. Sports communication researchers representing UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Culverhouse College of Commerce and College of Education, as well as Stillman College, will present findings through oral research presentations, posters and a film.

SMDC deputy to the commander Richard Chronister inducted into Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame

The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command’s deputy to the commander is one of the newest members of the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame. Ronald Chronister was one of six individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame at ceremonies held Feb. 23 in Birmingham. Chronister was nominated by Dr. Judy Bonner, president of the University of Alabama, and Dr. Chuck Karr, dean of engineering at Alabama.

Alabama Football: Success on Field is Good for Academics

Football is king at Alabama. It always has been and always will be. However, last year the Tide won national championships in four different sports. This is important because the recent national attention earned by football and other programs has helped the University to new levels of success on and off the field of play…The University of Alabama has doubled the size of its student body in recent years and attracted a slim majority of students from other states. While the focus of the administration has been to reach out and recruit the best and brightest students, and they have done a fantastic job, the success of college sports at Alabama has helped in that effort.
