THROUGH THE DOORS
Using the theme “Through the Doors,” The University of Alabama is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of UA with a series of activities and events throughout 2013. A special series of events is also planned for June 8-11. All events will honor the desegregation of UA, which occurred in June 1963; the courage and dedication of the two African-American students who enrolled in the University on June 11, 1963; the University’s changes over the past 50 years; and the University’s commitment to continued progress in the future. A special website devoted to the anniversary has been launched at http://www.throughthedoors.ua.edu. Those interested can check the site often for calendar events, special remembrances and other highlights of the year and the past 50 years.
The Graduate Student Leadership Council invites all members of the UA community to join the council in attending the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee in Selma, Ala., on Sunday, March 3, in commemoration of several historic civil rights events. The UA contingent will leave Bibb Graves Hall at 10 a.m. and arrive back in Tuscaloosa around 7 p.m. The cost of the trip is $15, which will cover transportation to and from Selma. Activities include a pre-rally at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, a re-enactment of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and a post-march rally. One of the University’s highest priorities is the safety and well-being of its students. One way students can stay safe is to avoid traveling alone at night and to confine walking to well-lit, regular-traveled walks and pathways. Students can refer to the Safer Living Guide for safety precautions to take on and off campus.
Students may also sign up for the GUARDIAN program, which allows students to use their cell phones to notify UAPD at the touch of a button if they need emergency assistance or to set a passive timer based on their expected arrival time at a destination on campus or in the Tuscaloosa area. If a student initiates an emergency call or if the notification timer is not deactivated, GUARDIAN software provides UAPD with critical profile information and, in most cases, GPS information to help contact and locate the student if necessary. Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 16 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. Students can register online at http://urca.ua.edu. March 22 is the deadline to register and submit a project abstract. Students can nominate individuals for the UA AAA Academic Advisor Excellence Award. The award recognizes the importance of academic advising and is given to an outstanding faculty advisor, professional advisor or someone with responsibility for advising who has made significant contributions to the field of academic advising. The Collegiate 100 Black Women is an organization that promotes professionalism, academic excellence and cultural awareness. Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority is encouraging students to vote for UA basketball coach Anthony Grant in ESPN’s Coaches’ Charity Challenge. CNN anchor Don Lemon will speak as part of the Capstone Conversations series at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Ferguson Center Theater. His presentation is part of the events commemorating the 50th anniversary of integration at the University. A book signing follows the lecture. Copies of Lemon’s memoir, “Transparent,” will be available for purchase in the University Supply Store. Students can click here to register for free tickets to the event.
Bob Woodward, Washington Post associate editor, author and investigative reporter, will speak at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, in Sellers Auditorium at the Bryant Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public. Woodward is the speaker in the Gloria and John L. Blackburn Academic Symposium Lecture under the auspices of UA’s Blackburn Institute. His visit will include meetings with the Blackburn Fellows.
UA’s Black Student Union and the NAACP invite all UA students to the annual State of the Black Union on Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Russell Hall. UA students are invited to participate in Higher Education Day in Montgomery, Ala., on Feb. 28. Students and others across the state will gather on the Capitol steps to raise awareness for funding higher education in Alabama. The third annual Alabama Modern Language Conference will be held March 1-2 in 327 Ferguson Center from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day. The conference will feature participants from UA and other U.S. universities. A free community screening of “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare” will be held March 3 at 3 p.m. at the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa. A panel discussion will follow the screening, which is being sponsored by several UA organizations. The documentary was an official selection of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The Women’s Resource Center will present the third Brown Bag Lecture Series on March 6 at noon in 360 Ferguson Center. “Echo,” an exhibit of paintings by UA graduate student Astri Snodgrass, is on display through March 3 in the Ferguson Center Art Gallery. Gallery hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The exhibition highlights selections of recent work that explore memory and perception. The Community Service Center will be taking students to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa on Feb. 23. Students will help with external repairs on a home in the Tuscaloosa community. The Community Service Center is asking for gift cards to send to Hattiesburg, Miss., and the University of Southern Mississippi community to help purchase items needed following a Feb. 10 tornado that damaged parts of that city and the USM campus.
