ANNOUNCEMENTS

Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 16 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. Students can register online at http://urca.ua.edu. March 22 is the deadline to register and submit a project abstract. Students can nominate individuals for the UA AAA Academic Advisor Excellence Award. The award recognizes the importance of academic advising and is given to an outstanding faculty advisor, professional advisor or someone with responsibility for advising who has made significant contributions to the field of academic advising. STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Division of Student Affairs will cover tuition and travel costs for students selected to attend the 2013 LeaderShape Institute that will be held July 28-Aug. 2 in Atlanta, Ga. To find out more about LeaderShape and its impact on participants, students are encouraged to attend information sessions hosted by UA students who attended the 2012 institute. Attendance at these sessions may also result in an advantage during the application-review stage. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Applications for SGA senate and executive offices are now available at http://vote.ua.edu. The application deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m. The spring campaign period will begin Feb. 25. The 49 student organization will hold its first official meeting of the spring semester on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Center. Attendees will discuss how to improve the experiences of current and future out-of-state students. More information: Douglas Fair at dcfair@crimson.ua.edu.

The Collegiate 100 Black Women is an organization that promotes professionalism, academic excellence and cultural awareness. The organization also participates in service projects throughout the Tuscaloosa area. Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority is encouraging students to vote for UA basketball coach Anthony Grant in ESPN’s Coaches’ Charity Challenge. The coach with the largest number of votes at the end of the contest will be awarded $100,000 for his chosen charity. Click here for more information and to vote. EVENTS

The University of Alabama Crossroads Community Center invites the campus and community to participate in events throughout February during African-American History Month.Click here for more information.

Any student who is interested in ordering an official UA ring can meet with representatives from Balfour on Feb. 13-15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ferguson Center lobby outside of the University Supply Store. Students can view a collection of the rings, have their fingers sized and ask questions. Students can also click here to order rings online. Rings are available to all students who earned a minimum of 60 hours while pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees at the University. Each day’s event will feature prizes and free food. Auditions will be held in 302 Ferguson Center on Thursday, Feb. 14 (4-9 p.m.), and Friday, Feb. 15 (noon-4 p.m.), for “The Vagina Monologues.” Auditions are open to any woman regardless of abilities, theater training, body type, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, race, or nationality as long as she is committed to the project. The performance is scheduled for April 16-17 at the Ferguson Center Theater and will be directed by Stacy Panitch and Jessi Hitchins. This community performance, hosted by the students in the Student Leadership Council and Alpha Psi Omega theatre and dance honor society, supports the Women’s Resource Center in WRC’s mission to provide counseling and advocacy for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence within The University of Alabama. Have you ever wanted to be a disc jockey? Students and faculty are invited to join University Programs on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. in 300 Ferguson Center to learn how to be an announcer. Auditions for the next Bama Idol are scheduled to begin soon. All registered UA students are eligible to audition on any of the following dates and at the following locations:

Auditions require a 30-second a cappella performance. A total of eight finalists will be selected to perform in the Bama Idol finale to be held on March 13 at 8 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. More information: bamaidol@gmail.com.

CNN anchor Don Lemon will speak to UA students as part of the Capstone Conversations series. His lecture begins at 6 p.m. on Feb. 21 in the Ferguson Center Theater. His presentation is part of the events commemorating the 50th anniversary of integration at the University. A book signing follows the lecture. Copies of Lemon’s memoir, “Transparent,” will be available for purchase in the University Supply Store. Students can click here to register for free tickets to the event.

UA students are invited to participate in Higher Education Day in Montgomery, Ala., on Feb. 28. Students and others across the state will gather on the Capitol steps to raise awareness for funding higher education in Alabama. UA students will leave from the Student Recreation Center at 7 a.m. that day and return at 3 p.m. Students can register for the free event at http://sga.ua.edu. “Echo,” an exhibit of paintings by UA graduate student Astri Snodgrass, is on display through March 3 in the Ferguson Center Art Gallery. Gallery hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The exhibition highlights selections of recent work that explore memory and perception. Snodgrass is in her second semester in the department of art and art history’s MFA studio art program with a concentration in painting. Her work can be viewed at http://www.astrisnodgrass.com.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Community Service Center will be taking students to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa on Saturday, Feb. 16. Students will help rebuild a home in the Alberta City area that was devastated by the April 27, 2011, tornado. Students will meet at the Ferguson Center at 8:15 a.m. to drive to the site and will work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students can sign up at http://slpro.ua.edu. The Community Service Center is asking for gift cards to send to Hattiesburg, Miss., and the University of Southern Mississippi community to help purchase items needed following a Feb. 10 tornado that damaged parts of that city and the USM campus. Students can bring gift cards to the CSC office at 346 Ferguson Center. CSC is also planning to take a group of students to Hattiesburg in March to help with relief efforts. The Up ’til Dawn student-run organization at UA invites all students to participate in the group’s letter-writing event on March 7 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Zone at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The event is held every year to support the fight against childhood cancer. Free food, game booths and a live band will be available. Visit Up ’til Dawn’s Facebook page for more information.
