ANNOUNCEMENTS

The deadline to apply for UA’s Premier Awards is Friday, Nov. 30, at 5 p.m. Each UA student who applies for the awards will need one letter of recommendation. The Premier Awards are the highest honors given by the University. They will be presented in February. More information and an application: http://www.premierawards.ua.edu.

Student Opinions of Instruction course evaluation surveys can be completed now through Dec. 9. Surveys for the School of Social Work will extend to Dec. 14. SOIs allow students to confidentially rate their UA learning experience and encourage feedback about their courses and instructors. Confidential reports of survey results are provided to UA faculty and administrators after grades are submitted. The New York Times has introduced a new benefit of the UA Collegiate Readership Program: full, complimentary access for the NYT website. With each pass claim, people will have full digital access to The New York Times for 24 hours on their computers and smartphones, as well as five articles each day from the 1923-1986 archives. Archive access will be unlimited for all other years. During the term, access will remain available over weekends and holidays. Students can recycle this semester’s old homework, notebooks, binder-ready books and other old class papers during Dead Week and finals week. Blue recycling bin locations include Bidgood Hall, Mary Burke Hall, Gorgas Library, Tutwiler Hall, University Supply Store, Ferguson Center and Bruno Library. The recycling project is sponsored by the Business Honors Program Sustainability Committee.

Students who have opinions about the area of Tuscaloosa near campus known as The Strip can click here to complete a survey. EVENTS

First Year Experience and Housing and Residential Communities are kicking off a civility campaign called “One Team. One Bama.” On Wednesday, Nov. 28, and Thursday, Nov. 29, representatives of the two groups will be in campus residence halls, the Student Recreation Center and the Ferguson Center with pledge cards and T-shirts for a campaign called “Hey Y’all.” Students who participate will pledge to say “hi” to peers in their halls or on campus.

December 3-7, students will submit photos of themselves living out the Capstone Creed and embracing the concept of “Hey Y’all” to the “One Team. One Bama” Facebook page. Ming Murray Smith will present a lecture on her work as part of the Paul Jones Collection of American Art Lecture Series on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 5:30 p.m. in 324 Lloyd Hall. Smith is a photographer based in New York City. Themes from her work encompass jazz music, dance, landscape, portraiture, and much more. The lecture is sponsored by UA’s College of Arts and Sciences.

The Alabama International Relations Club will host guest speakers from Liberty in North Korea on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 6:30 p.m. in 235 Lloyd Hall. LiNK is a grassroots organization in North America devoted to the North Korean human rights and humanitarian crises. Attendees will see LiNK’s latest documentary, “The People’s Crisis,” and also learn about the organization’s latest campaign. Refreshments will be provided. Students can register a team and select a campsite for UA’s Relay for Life that will be held April 12-13, 2013, on the UA campus. PHILANTHROPY

The UA Circle K club will light luminaries on the Quad Dec. 9 to raise money and awareness for a program dedicated to supplying books for at-risk preschool children. The luminaries have been a club tradition for more than 30 years. Students can enjoy free hot chocolate and caroling while learning about a great cause. Students can donate their used textbooks in a program to help student veterans, dependents of veterans and survivors of military action obtain books for use in their education. Textbooks for Troops is a program started by the UA Student Government Association in conjunction with the Campus Veterans Association and Phi Mu Delta fraternity. Students can drop off books now through Dec. 15 in one of the boxes at the following locations: the Ferguson Center near the SGA office, the Center for Veterans and Military Affairs in 1 B.B. The First Year Council is hosting a Capstone for Children gift drive Nov. 27-30 and Dec. 3-7 to benefit hospitalized children.Click here for a list of approved and prohibited gift items. Members of the Public Relations Student Society of America at UA are collecting coats and money as part of its Tuscaloosa Gives Back campaign to assist people affected by Hurricane Sandy. STUDENT AFFAIRS

The UA chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Counseling Center are accepting creative essays about students’ personal experiences with mental illness. Student actors will perform the essays as monologues in the third annual “Mental Health Monologues: Erase the Stigma.” Visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8NJWS2D to submit an essay or for more information. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Nov. 30.

Student organizations can apply for SOURCE Collaborative Grants at http://thesource.ua.edu. The grant is a tool to assist student organizations in funding events that help build a better community at both the University and Tuscaloosa community levels. The grant aims to foster partnership and communication between organizations on campus. Eligible organizations that partner together to host an event can receive up to $3,000.
