Applications for UA’s Premier Awards are available. Each UA student who applies for the awards will need one letter of recommendation. The Premier Awards are the highest honors given by the University. They will be presented in February. The deadline to apply is Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. More information: http://www.premierawards.ua.edu.
Blackboard Learn will replace the current e-Learning system on Dec. 31 and will be the only learning-management system used. Students should save any needed materials out of e-Learning by following the guide found here. To learn more about how to use Blackboard Learn, visit http://ondemand.blackboard.com. EVENTS
The Student Government Association is sponsoring a scholarship awareness forum for currently enrolled students today at 6 p.m. in 226 Lloyd Hall. The forum will provide students with information and resources for receiving scholarships from UA and outside sources. Scholarships for undergraduate study, graduate school, law school and study-abroad programs will be discussed. Presenters will be Dr. Charles Nash, vice chancellor for academic and student affairs with The University of Alabama System; Dr. Jacqueline Morgan, associate dean of the Honors College; and Dr. Gary Sloan, coordinator of prestigious scholarships and awards for the Honors College. Each attendee will receive a booklet of information regarding scholarships and resources on campus to help prepare for the application process and will also have a chance to win a $500 scholarship from the SGA. The Homegrown Alabama Farmers Market last market of 2012 will be Nov. 15 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the lawn at Canterbury Episcopal Chapel. Seasonal produce, local meat, goat cheese and soap will be available, as well as craft vendors and the market’s regular vendors. Available produce will include a variety of cooking greens, root vegetables, lettuces, peanuts, broccoli, hot peppers, persimmons, passion fruit, pears and a few tomatoes. The Student Health Center Department of Health Promotion and Wellness, in collaboration with Project Health and the Student Government Association, is hosting the Great American Smokeout through Nov. 15. To showcase the environmental and health dangers of smoking, the Health Hut will provide supplies for a cigarette cleanup. Students can stop by the Health Hut Nov. 13-14 and pick up gloves and plastic bags to collect cigarette butts littering campus. Full bags can be returned to the Health Hut. The UA student chapter of Alabama Arise and the School of Social Work invite all students to a discussion about the death penalty and social justice on Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. in 111 ten Hoor Hall. The effects of capital punishment on society will be explored through the words of Gary Drinkard, an exonerated death-row inmate, and Joanne Terrell, death-penalty mitigator and instructor for the School of Social Work. The fourth annual Bama Buddies service project has begun. Bama Buddies allows student organizations to buy, build and customize stuffed animals for donation to children during the holiday. The Saturday, Nov. 17, football game against Western Carolina kicks off at 11:21 a.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will be televised on the SEC Network (CW21-WTTO TV in Tuscaloosa). The UA chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Counseling Center are accepting creative essays about students’ personal experiences with mental illness. UA’s Up ‘til Dawn for St. Jude’s Awareness Week is ongoing through Nov. 16. Student organizations can apply for SOURCE Collaborative Grants at http://thesource.ua.edu. The grant is a tool to assist student organizations in funding events that help build a better community at both the University and Tuscaloosa community levels. The grant aims to foster partnership and communication between organizations on campus. Eligible organizations that partner together to host an event can receive up to $3,000.
