Free flu vaccinations for UA students will be available at the following locations from noon to 4:30 p.m. on the dates indicated: Oct. 10 at Presidential Village and Oct. 11 at Riverside Community. Free flu shots are also available at the Student Health Center during regular clinic hours; no appointment is necessary. Supplies are limited. More information: Student Health Center at 348-6262.
Applications for homecoming queen are posted online at http://vote.ua.edu and are due Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. Completed applications should be sent via email to sgaelections@sa.ua.edu. An informational meeting will be held tonight at 7 in 309 Ferguson Center.
The Student Government Association and the Ferguson Center will provide free transportation for the first 100 students who have their own tickets for the Alabama vs. Tennessee football game in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 20 and who donate three canned goods. Students who register will be notified about the specific time of departure via email. No student will be allowed to board one of the two Ride with the Tide charter buses without a ticket, a cellphone and three canned goods. Click here for complete information and to register.
The Higher Education Act of 1965 requires institutions to make certain information available to the campus community and general public. The University has established a website, http://www.ua.edu/academic/hea, to compile and disclose in one location pertinent information related to the HEA’s requirements. The University of Alabama Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report and The University of Alabama Gadsden Center Annual Campus Security Report are now available. These reports are required by federal law and contain policy statements and crime statistics, and for UA, applicable fire safety policies and procedures. These reports also address policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security (e.g., policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses). Three years’ worth of statistics are included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the school, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus. The UA and Gadsden Center reports are available online to view or print at http://safety.ua.edu. People may also request a paper copy of either report from the Office of Community Services at 205-348-8361, http://police.ua.edu or at Box 870180, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0180.
EVENTS
Events for Academic Integrity Week will be held today through Oct. 12. The week is hosted by the UA Academic Honor Council, a student organization that works with faculty members and students to increase the awareness of academic integrity. Click here for a schedule of events.
The 19th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive is underway and will continue through Nov. 16. Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is an annual food drive held during the weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl when students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members “fight” hunger and poverty in West Alabama by challenging Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more nonperishable food to help needy families. As part of BABH, the Community Service Center will host the “Stamp Out Hunger” letter-sending event on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. To raise money, students will send letters to friends and family requesting donations in their honor for BABH. The CSC will provide all letters and postage supplies. Students who send the most letters will be entered to win prizes. Additionally, sorority and fraternity members can earn one Panhellenic point for every five letters they send. George Bodenheimer, the longest-tenured president in the history of ESPN, will hold a question and answer session in the Ferguson Center Theater at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. The event is free and open to the public. Click here for more information.
The University of Alabama Department of American Studies will host “Remembering and Celebrating Jim Salem” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in 216 Lloyd Hall. Members of the University and Tuscaloosa community are invited to share their remembrances of Dr. Jim Salem, who died July 6. Salem was professor emeritus and longtime chair of the department of American Studies. A Jim Salem Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in his honor. Donations can be made the night of the ceremony or mailed to The University of Alabama Department of American Studies, Box 870214, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.
The Student Health Fair will be held Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. Students can receive free vaccinations and screenings, including flu shots and blood-pressure, glucose, cholesterol and anemia screenings. Free massages will also be available. UA organizations involved in the health and well-being of students and representatives of area nonprofit agencies will distribute information about their services. Free refreshments and snacks will be provided. Door prizes will be given away. Students will need to bring their ACT cards to participate in the health fair. The Student Government Association’s Academic Scavenger Hunt continues today through Oct. 26. During this event, students complete academic passports, which are available from the SGA office at 231 Ferguson Center. Each participating student must perform the following activities in order to complete a passport: visit two separate professors during their office hours, attend an advising session, use an academic resource on campus (e.g., the Center for Teaching and Learning, engineering labs, the Writing Center) and complete an academic planner on DegreeWorks. Students return their passports to the SGA office upon completion, at which time they can enter a drawing for prizes. Students can buy tickets for the Avett Brothers concert at 356 Ferguson Center. The concert is Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and will feature special guests Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for reserved seats, with a limit of two tickets per individual. Group packages are available. UA will offer an additional course term to students during winter break. Winter Interim, a new term of the Interim program, presents an opportunity for students to participate in creative and innovative educational experiences through online and travel courses. Students may enroll for one course during Winter Interim, which is Dec. 17, 2012-Jan. 8, 2013. Classes will not meet on official UA holidays. More information: http://interim.ua.edu.
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
The 49, an organization for out-of-state students at UA, will host a brief information meeting about upcoming service and involvement opportunities Oct. 14 at the Ferguson Center Theater. The SOURCE has launched its new website, thesource.ua.edu. Student organizations can find resources such as The Lasso, a collection of activities like icebreakers and team builders; Creative Consults, a branding and design team; and the Source Course, a tutorial video series outlining important campus logistics and innovative productivity tools. The new website also contains a directory of registered student organizations.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Every Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, the Community Service Center will bring volunteers to Temporary Emergency Services to assist with various projects, such as sorting donations, working in the thrift store and building food bags for clients. Volunteers will meet at the Community Service Center in 346 Ferguson Center; transportation will be provided. Students who are interested in this opportunity can register at http://SLPro.ua.edu. The Community Service Center has partnered with the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center to provide volunteers for the 2012 Stand Down for Homeless Veterans event that will be held Oct. 12. Volunteers are needed Wednesday, Oct. 10, through Thursday, Oct. 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to help set up at Beulah Baptist Church. Arts Renaissance in Tuscaloosa Schools is seeking UA students to lead arts-related workshops for kindergarten through fifth grades at Tuscaloosa-area public schools. Volunteers are also needed to assist at workshops. Participation could involve as few as three hours. Students interested in a higher level of participation can also earn independent study credit through New College. The workshops are held during the regular school day, usually on Thursdays or Fridays between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., though days and times can be flexible.
