Blackboard Learn will replace the current e-Learning system on Dec. 31 and will be the only learning-management system used. The Office for Academic Affairs encourages students to familiarize themselves with the benefits of DegreeWorks, the University’s software program that provides Web-based academic advising and degree audit tools. Administered by the Office of the University Registrar, DegreeWorks helps students finish in eight semesters by enhancing their ability to plan schedules, track progress in degree completion and calculate GPA. UA’s mobile application has two new features designed specifically for UA students. Access courses through the Learn module and access class schedule, grades for every term and MyTickets through the Student module. Visit http://m.ua.edu/app to update or download.
Students can receive help with their research papers by using the “research rescue” service at Gorgas Library. Librarians are always available to help with developing research topics, finding resources and citing sources. SAS Education Analytic Suite is now available to academic departments, faculty, staff and students on personal and University-owned machines for teaching and research purposes at no charge to the end user, according to the Office of Information Technology. DewPoint, Sigma Tau Delta‘s literary magazine, is accepting creative and critical submissions for the 2013 edition. Dr. Frank Jackson will lecture on “The Problem of Consciousness Revisited” today at 7:30 p.m. in 205 Smith Hall. The free public lecture is part of the UA philosophy department’s Philosophy Today series. Jackson is the Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Australian National University and a regular visiting professor at Princeton University.

Sigma Delta Tau sorority will hold a stem-cell swab drive to find compatible donors for a person in need of a stem-cell transplant. The Community Service Center will host the Hunger Banquet Nov. 14 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Center ballroom. Participants in this interactive event sit and eat a meal determined by the luck of the draw, just as in real life some are born into relative prosperity and others into poverty. The banquet will allow many to gain a new perspective on the root causes of hunger and poverty in the world. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Community Service Center Alternative Break scholarship deadline has been changed to Thursday, Nov. 1, and will include all 2012 and 2013 trips. Students who want to take trips during Winter Break, the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Spring Break and May Interim will are required to submit applications by 5 p.m. on Nov. 1 to the Community Service Center in 346 Ferguson Center. This year, the CSC is offering domestic trips within Alabama to Greensboro and Lee County, as well as trips to New Orleans, La., and Memphis, Tenn. International trips are also available to Belize and the Dominican Republic.
Students can volunteer to work shifts to register individuals who want to donate bone marrow. The drive will be held Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of Reese Phifer Hall and in the Ferguson Center. Students can also join the bone-marrow registry at this time.
