The University of Alabama’s smoking policy prohibits smoking in all campus buildings. In addition, smoking is not allowed within 30 feet of entrances to buildings. UA’s Office of Health Promotion and Wellness and the Student Health Center offer tobacco-cessation programs for faculty, staff and students. The Student Government Association and the Ferguson Center will provide free transportation for the first 100 students who have their own tickets for the Alabama vs. Tennessee football game in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 20 and who donate three canned goods. Students who register will be notified about the specific time of departure via email. No student will be allowed to board one of the two Ride with the Tide charter buses without a ticket, a cellphone and three canned goods. Click here for complete information and to register.
Students can receive help with their research papers by using the “research rescue” service at Gorgas Library. Librarians are always available to help with developing research topics, finding resources and citing sources. Special hours for research rescue are available Monday-Thursday, 4-6 p.m., through Dec. 10 at the first-floor Information Desk at Gorgas Library. Students can honor friends and loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer, or they can remember someone who has died from the disease, by creating ornaments for the Breast Cancer Honor and Remembrance Tree event sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center. Trees will be located at the following locations during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: the Ferguson Center, the Student Recreation Center, the Student Health Center and Capstone Village. The University of Alabama Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report and The University of Alabama Gadsden Center Annual Campus Security Report are now available. These reports are required by federal law and contain policy statements and crime statistics, and for UA, applicable fire safety policies and procedures. These reports also address policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security (e.g., policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses). Three years’ worth of statistics are included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the school, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus. EVENTS
All UA students are invited to participate in the Culverhouse College Business Plan Competition. A workshop will be held today at 7:30 p.m. in 379 Bidgood Hall. The Candlelight Vigil, an annual event that honors and remembers survivors of dating and domestic violence, will be held today at 6 p.m. at Denny Chimes. In case of rain, the event will move to Smith Hall. Various campus and community speakers will be present.

Join the UA chapter of the American Constitution Society for a panel discussion on campaign finance and judicial elections Wednesday, Oct. 17, noon-1 p.m., at the Law Center in room 172. Speakers include, Billy Corriher, associate director for research legal progress at the Center for American Progress; Sue Bell Cobb, former chief justice of Alabama; and R. The 19th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive is underway and will continue through Nov. 16. Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is an annual food drive held during the weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl when students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members “fight” hunger and poverty in West Alabama by challenging Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more nonperishable food to help needy families. The Student Health Fair will be held Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. Students can receive free vaccinations and screenings, including flu shots and blood-pressure, glucose, cholesterol and anemia screenings. Free massages will also be available. UA organizations involved in the health and well-being of students and representatives of area nonprofit agencies will distribute information about their services. Free refreshments and snacks will be provided. Door prizes will be given away. Students will need to bring their ACT cards to participate in the health fair. The Student Government Association’s Academic Scavenger Hunt continues today through Oct. 26. During this event, students complete academic passports, which are available from the SGA office at 231 Ferguson Center. Each participating student must perform the following activities in order to complete a passport: visit two separate professors during their office hours, attend an advising session, use an academic resource on campus (e.g., the Center for Teaching and Learning, engineering labs, the Writing Center) and complete an academic planner on DegreeWorks. Students return their passports to the SGA office upon completion, at which time they can enter a drawing for prizes. Delta Zeta sorority and the 2012 pledge class will host Nachos for Needy on Oct. 18. The event begins at 11 p.m. and will feature an all-you-can-eat nacho buffet. Admission is $5, and tickets can be purchased at the door or from any Delta Zeta member. Proceeds from the event will go to the speech and hearing impaired and the Painted Turtle Camp. The Circle K organization at UA is sponsoring a campout to help put books in the hands of underprivileged children across the state of Alabama. Volunteers will camp out in Opelika, Ala., Friday night, Oct. 19, and then assist with a 5K run and book distribution Saturday morning, Oct. 20. The Air Force ROTC at UA is holding its first Pumpkin Carve Oct. 26 at the Bureau of Mines behind Gorgas Library. Money raised will be used to buy care packages for soldiers overseas. AFROTC will sell pumpkins to carve and set on display for judging. Winners will receive prizes. Music and games will be available. All students, parents and children are invited to participate. The event starts at 9 a.m. for participants from local elementary schools, day cares and retirement centers. Beginning at noon, the event will be open to the rest of the public. UA will offer an additional course term to students during winter break. Winter Interim, a new term of the Interim program, presents an opportunity for students to participate in creative and innovative educational experiences through online and travel courses. The SOURCE has launched its new website, thesource.ua.edu. Student organizations can find resources such as The Lasso, a collection of activities like icebreakers and team builders; Creative Consults, a branding and design team; and the Source Course, a tutorial video series outlining important campus logistics and innovative productivity tools. The new website also contains a directory of registered student organizations.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Every Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, the Community Service Center will take volunteers to Temporary Emergency Services to assist with various projects, such as sorting donations, working in the thrift store and building food bags for clients.
