MOUNDVILLE NATIVE AMERICAN FESTIVAL – UA Museums’ Moundville Archaeological Park will host its 23rd Native American Festival from Wednesday, Oct. 10, through Saturday, Oct. 13, at the park. BEAT AUBURN BEAT HUNGER – The UA Community Service Center is kicking off the 19th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive Monday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Ferguson Plaza, Reese Phifer Hall and Lloyd Hall. The event will include music and free food as well as the opportunity to vote in a pie throwing contest. The CSC is also hosting the 2012 “Stamp Out Hunger” letter-sending event on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 4-9 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center.Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is an annual food drive held during the weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl when students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members “fight” hunger and poverty in West Alabama by challenging Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more nonperishable food to help needy families. LONGTIME ESPN PRESIDENT GEORGE BODENHEIMER TO HOLD Q&A SESSION – The longest-tenured ESPN president, George Bodenheimer, will visit the UA campus Thursday, Oct. 11 as a guest of the UA Program in Sports Communication. Bodenheimer was president of the sports conglomerate for 13 years and currently is executive chairman for ESPN Inc. UA OPERA THEATRE – In “Something Old, Something New: The Then and Now of Opera,” UA Opera Theatre offers a selection of scenes, songs and arias from baroque and modern opera.  A highlight of the show will be the world-premiere performances of ”Onomast” by Thomas Wilson, the winner of the first Opera Composition Contest, paired with selections from the first century of opera. The evening also will feature a sneak peek at Amir Zaheri’s new musical “Over Dinner,” which will receive its premiere in the spring of 2013. SLASH PINE FESTIVAL – The Slash Pine Press’s poetry festival will be Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, in venues at UA and in downtown Tuscaloosa. The events, which feature UA and regional poets, are free and open to the public. The first reading will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, on the Quad in front of Gorgas Library. The second will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at 205 Gorgas Library. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY WEEK events will be held on campus Oct. 8-12. BOOK TALK – UA’s Honors College is hosting Lecia Brooks, director of outreach of the Southern Poverty Law Center, to speak about the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” a story about the collision between ethics, race and medicine. Brooks often gives presentations around the country to promote tolerance and diversity. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in 38 Lloyd Hall. LOOKING AHEAD

SONIC FRONTIERS – The Ullman/Swell 4 featuring German musician Gebhard Ullman (reeds) and New York-based musicians Steve Swell (trombone), Barry Altschul (drums) and Hill Greene (bass) will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Recital Hall in UA’s Moody Music Building. The concert, part of the Sonic Frontiers series, is free and open to the public. SIDE MAN – UA’s department of theatre and dance presents “Side Man” by Warren Leight at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 through Saturday, Oct. 20, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Marian Gallaway Theatre.
