UA Counseling Professor Wins National Award for Research, Teaching, Service

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Lisa M. Hooper, associate professor of counselor education at The University of Alabama, has received the Dr. Linda Seligman Award from the American Mental Health Counselor Association.

The award is given to educators who have shown dedication and commitment to the field of counseling, including outstanding and humanitarian service to others through teaching, consulting, supervising and research.

During her eight-year tenure at UA, Hooper has received numerous national and local awards for her research, teaching and service. Most recently, she received the Paul W. Bryant Endowed Professorship for Distinction in Teaching.

Her research related to family systems and culture has received national recognition as well. In 2010, she received the Emerging Leader Award from the American Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development and the Outstanding Research Poster Presentation Award from the American Mental Health Counseling Association.

Hooper’s research on mental health treatment in primary care has also been recognized. Recently, Hooper was invited to serve on a National Institutes of Health’s review panel on methodology and measurement in the behavioral and social sciences in rural and minority health and primary care decision-making.

Hooper will serve as a guest editor for a special issue in the Journal of Mental Health Counseling on mental health counselors, psychologists, social workers and other mental health care providers working in primary care settings.

Hooper serves on four editorial boards: Journal of Counseling and Development; The Family Journal: Counseling and Therapy for Couples and Families; Journal of Mental Health Counseling; and the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development.

Her research lab focuses on issues related to family functioning, cultural competency, and culturally tailored mental health and medical care. Hooper has authored or co-authored more than 47 publications, including articles, books and book chapters.
