WELCOME HOME, DR. BAILEY

The UA family welcomes Dr. Guy Bailey, an Alabama native and two-time alumnus of the University, as the 37th president of the Capstone.  Prior to coming to UA, Bailey served as president of Texas Tech University and under his leadership Texas Tech grew significantly in size and stature, including developing major new research partnerships with public and private entities. Bailey was previously chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 2006-2008 and provost and executive vice president at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 1999-2005. He has also held administrative positions at the University of Nevada, the University of Memphis and Oklahoma State, and taught at Texas A&M and Emory University.

Bailey attended UA from 1968-1974, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English. He earned his doctorate in English linguistics at the University of Tennessee in 1979.

ATHLETICS

Get in the Game information is available. The Crimson Tide football team will play its home opener Saturday, Sept. 8, against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Whether you currently have tickets or need tickets to the game, you will want to know how to “Get in the Game” and how the changes to the way student tickets are handled, how to enter the stadium (Gate 31 only), and how parking near the stadium affects you. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Don’t miss your opportunity to apply for Freshman Forum, a leadership development program for first-year students at The University of Alabama. Through Freshman Forum, freshman students have the opportunity to build a network of peers, faculty and staff across campus, gain an awareness of campus resources and develop their personal leadership identity. The University will test UA Alerts and the emergency public address system at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. The test of the PA system will coincide with the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency’s test of the outdoor tornado sirens. The test will last about 30 seconds and should not be disruptive.

Students should update their contact information on myBama to ensure they receive the UA Alerts messages. The student’s cellphone number should be the primary contact number. Dr. Judy Bonner and the Office of Academic Affairs are pleased to announce the start of a new tradition for the UA family: the launch of “Celebrating Achievement.” This new song is designed to publicly recognize and celebrate students, faculty and staff who achieve national recognition, awards and honors.

This week the Denny Chimes will play the new celebratory song at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. to help the campus community become familiar with the melody and to recognize and honor students who are past recipients of national-level awards. This includes 15 Rhodes Scholars, 37 Goldwater Scholars, eight Truman Scholars, 19 Hollings Scholars, two Javits Fellows, one Udall Scholar and one Portz Scholar. The song will also play in honor of faculty and staff who have achieved national recognition.

When you hear “Celebrating Achievement” played on the Chimes in the coming months, please stop for a moment to celebrate success and then look for an email announcing the award recipient’s name and honor.

Registration continues for the National Outreach Scholarship Conference that will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in the Bryant Conference Center. The conference is open to all students with an interest or involvement in engaged scholarship. The conference will explore engaged scholarship and practice that advance the theme “Partner. Inspire. The University of Alabama Adapted Athletics program has seven athletes and one coach representing their respective countries at the Paralympics in London, England, which began Aug. 29 and will conclude Sept. 9.Click here for more information.

The University of Alabama has been selected as one of the top 20 schools for “The South’s Best Tailgate” by Southern Living magazine. The magazine is letting fans ultimately choose the winner in a contest that will end Oct. 1. EVENTS

Get on Board Day, originally scheduled for Aug. 30, will be held Sept. 11 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. The event will feature more than 350 organizations, vendors and campus departments. GOBD is a great way for students to explore the various involvement opportunities at UA. The French House invites all students who are interested in French language and culture to an open house Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The house is located in Unit D of the Smith Woods complex located near the Crimson Ride transit hub and the Biology Building. The first movie in the Fall Semester 2012 French Movies Series is “Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre.” It will be shown Sept. 20 at the French House located in Unit D of the Smith Woods complex located near the Crimson Ride transit hub and the Biology Building. LIBRARIES

A valid UA Action Card is needed to access exterior doors at Gorgas, Rodgers, and Bruno libraries each day from 10 p.m. until closing. All exterior doors will be locked at 10 p.m. Patrons should use the Capstone Drive entrance to Gorgas Library, the main entrance to Rodgers Library and either entrance to Bruno Library.

The Sanford Media Center in 205-B Gorgas Library now has a GoPro, a Lensbaby kit, a boom mic kit, a green screen, and additional lighting options for checkout, as well as stock video, compositing footage and Final Cut Pro X. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Applications will be accepted Sept. 7-Oct. 1 for membership in Avanti and Parent Ambassadors. Members serve as official ambassadors for the University during Bama Bound and recruitment events. The Circus is coming to town at the Theta Tau House, located between the Crimson Ride Hub and Bryant Drive. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The University of Alabama Community Service Center is hosting the 2012 Volunteer Expo on Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Center for all students. Representatives from area nonprofit agencies will be on hand to provide information about their organizations and their specific volunteer needs. The CSC works with local nonprofit agencies throughout the year by connecting them with service-minded students.

The SGA in conjunction with the Community Service Center has planned a day of Sunday service in which students can assist with relief efforts for the April 27th tornado. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23. Volunteers will arrive at the Volunteer Reception Center at noon to help with debris removal in the areas of Tuscaloosa that remain devastated from the tornado. Project Health is looking for health ambassadors for the Fall Semester 2012 to provide peer health education to UA students. Health ambassadors develop health programs for student organizations and residence halls, promote and participate in health-awareness months and weeks, participate in community outreach, and more. RECREATION

SAFETY AND WELL-BEING

To keep students informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University uses UA Alerts to send notifications via email, telephone and SMS text messaging to contact information on file in student records. Students should make sure their contact information on myBama is updated. Students can update their records by logging on to myBama and making changes in the Student Self-Service area.
