Students who want to build a stronger, more prosperous and just society can register for the 2012 National Outreach Scholarship Conference, which will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 3 at the Bryant Conference Center. Undergraduate, graduate and professional students who are engaged in service-learning activities or who are studying the impact of service-learning and community engagement are encouraged to attend. The Graduate Student Assembly invites all UA graduate students participating in research to submit their abstracts for the Graduate Student Association Research Conference, which will be held Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Shelby Hall. Abstracts should be 250-300 words each and are due Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Submitted posters should be 36 inches by 48 inches. The UA Crossroads Community Center has organized a variety of campus events open to the community for national Hispanic Heritage Month, which is currently in progress and will continue through Oct. 15. The General Interest and Business Career Fair will be held Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Technical and Engineering Career Fair will be held Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bryant Conference Center. All majors are welcome. Full-time, part-time and internship opportunities will be available. Students must bring their Action Cards and résumés. Required dress is business professional — no flip-flops, jeans, shorts, T-shirts or party wear. All student parking will remain unchanged for the career fair. Students who park in a restricted area or zone not covered by their existing parking permits risk receiving tickets and being fined. Family Weekend 2012 will be held Sept. 21-23. During the weekend, UA families will connect with one another, become more familiar with campus and spend time with their students. The First Year Experience and Parent Programs sponsor Family Weekend. Event activities include a poolside party, barbecue tailgate, jazz brunch and free giveaways. The Community Service Center invites students to attend Keeping up with the Kids, an awareness symposium addressing illiteracy and lack of art education in school systems. The event will be Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. A three-person panel will discuss issues faced by local school. Panel experts will be Patience Melius, an employee of the Brewer-Porch Children’s Center; Ernestine Tucker, a Tuscaloosa educator; and Lois Palecek, director of Community Service Programs of West Alabama and the Head Start program. “Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre,” the first movie in the Fall Semester 2012 French Movies Series, will be shown Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the French House. Dr. Katherine Newman will lecture on the effects of tax policy on the working poor Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Student Government Association in conjunction with the Community Service Center has planned a day of service for Sept. 23 in which students can assist with relief efforts in the areas of Tuscaloosa that remain devastated from the April 27, 2011, tornado. UA’s Community Service Center and the Career Center announce the second Nonprofit Protégé Program. The Nonprofit Protégé Program is an eight-week experience that allows UA students to work alongside the director of a nonprofit organization. A limited number of students will be selected. Students will be required to participate in an orientation session, communicate with the nonprofit mentor to create a weekly schedule at the agency, sign a confidentiality document and develop an initiative to increase UA’s volunteer contributions to the nonprofit. Each student selected must be at least a sophomore with a minimum 2.5 GPA. An application is due no later than Sept. 21 by 5 p.m. to the Community Service Center at 346 Ferguson Center. Candidates will interview for a position on Oct. 3, and all applicants will be notified by Oct. 4 of their status in the program. Volunteers are needed to be a part of the UA Collegiate Executive Board and Committee for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life that will be held at UA in spring 2013. The Collegiate Executive Board and Committee will meet monthly to plan logistics, entertainment, marketing, team recruitment and more. Members of the UA women’s softball team will receive their 2012 NCAA national championship rings during a presentation at Rhoads Stadium Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. Admission is free. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. In addition to welcoming back the 2012 national championship team, fans can participate in the celebration with a crowd photo and autograph session.
