ANNOUNCEMENTS
The University will not test UA Alerts on Wednesday, May 2, because students will be taking final examinations. UA Alerts is the University of Alabama’s emergency communication system. The system is normally tested on the first Wednesday of each month. In the event of a campus emergency, the system sends notifications via email, telephone and SMS text messaging to contact information on file in student and employee records. Students can update their records by logging on to myBama and making changes in the Student Self-Service area. More information: http://prepare.ua.edu.
UA will hold commencement ceremonies May 4 and 5 in Coleman Coliseum to award degrees to its spring graduates. Commencement exercises for students in the colleges of Communication and Information Sciences, Education, Human Environmental Sciences and Nursing will be at 6 p.m., Friday, May 4. Two ceremonies will be held Saturday, May 5, with students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Social Work receiving their degrees at 9 a.m. and students in the colleges of Commerce and Business Administration and Engineering receiving their degrees at 1:30 p.m. In addition, the School of Law will hold its commencement exercises May 5 at 5 p.m. The commencement ceremonies will be broadcast live over the Internet. The webcast will be archived on UA’s website, http://www.ua.edu/commencement, and will be available for viewing through May 2012.
Increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic is expected for both the Friday evening and Saturday services around the University Medical Center, Student Health Center, Child Development Research Center, Capstone College of Nursing, UA Police Department, RISE Center, Student Recreation Center, Speech and Hearing Center, and softball, tennis and soccer complexes. (Click here to access a campus map.) On Friday, the soccer lot will be used for parking. Crimson Ride buses will circulate continuously from about 4 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, the heaviest traffic is expected between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. UA Transportation Services advises commuters to take the Campus Drive East exit via McFarland Boulevard, turn left onto Campus Drive East then left onto Fifth Avenue East at the light. Parking Services expects to use the soccer lot, all University Medical Center lots except the southeast lot, and the grass parking areas on the eastside of campus to accommodate the Saturday crowds.
Local law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel, along with The University of Alabama Police Department, will conduct training at Rose Towers May 7-12 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Commuters should expect to see police and fire vehicles and personnel in and around the building.
Students should be aware of the following infrastructure closures that will occur on campus:
- On May 7, the parking lot of Rose Towers will close permanently.
- Beginning May 14, the right turn lane into the parking lot of Rose Towers will close indefinitely.
- Beginning May 14, the sidewalk on the northbound side of Hackberry Lane from the detention pond to Jack Warner Parkway will close indefinitely.
All students with an interest or involvement in engaged scholarship are invited to register to attend the National Outreach Scholarship Conference, which will be held in the Bryant Conference Center Sept. 30-Oct. 3. Slash Pine Press is accepting writing of less than 100 words that captures the spirit of the Tuscaloosa, Holt, Alberta City and University communities during and after the April 27 tornadoes. As UA students wind down the semester and look forward to the fun of summer, safety may be the last thing on their minds. The University encourages students to take an active role in staying safe and protecting themselves from crimes by taking advantage of two University resources: Safe@UA and the Safer Living Guide. Students can increase their safety skills by watching the Safe@UA video, an interactive guide that addresses five major topics: personal safety, emergency preparedness and response, UA severe weather guidelines, preventing theft and preventing assaults. The Safer Living Guide offers tips on how to stay safe while working, playing, studying or traveling.
The University of Alabama Career Center and the National Capital Alumni Chapter invite students to “UA in DC,” a networking event that exists to bring UA student interns and alumni together for shared interests, networking and education. The event will be held June 19 in the office of Van Scoyoc Associates, 101 Constitution Ave. NW, Suite 600 West, Washington, DC 20001. UA students who have brothers or sisters in high school can inform their siblings that registration is now open for the UA Summer Creative Writing Camp for high school students. No previous writing experience is required. Graduate students in UA’s Master of Fine Arts program will lead the two-week camp under the direction of Professor Robin Behn. Camp participants will experiment with different forms of writing, give a public reading and create their own publication. The camp will meet May 28-June 8 (Monday-Friday, 1-4 p.m.) in 301 Morgan Hall. Tuition is free. UA’s Faculty Resource Center offers the following tips to help students have a successful exam experience in eLearning:
- Turn assignments in as soon as possible rather than waiting until the last minute. This allows time to meet deadlines if technology problems occur.
- Be patient. Like many other online tools, when eLearning is busy, the system can get confused if users click repeatedly. Give the system several seconds to respond to a click.
- Some Windows computer users may notice that their browser now requires the most recent version of Java in order to upload assignments. Visit http://www.java.com to download the newest version of Java.

University of Alabama and Shelton State Community College students will perform a series of original short plays, dances and musical compositions written specifically as remembrances, reflections and reactions to the events of April 27, 2011. Nine of the plays were written by UA students as part of an assignment by Steve Burch, UA associate professor of theatre history and playwriting. “Inside the Tornado” will be presented at the Bean-Brown Theatre at Shelton State May 3 and May 4 at 7:30 p.m. and May 5 at 2 p.m. Performances are free.
