UA Professor Selected for Fulbright Specialist Grant in China

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Joy Burnham, associate professor and program coordinator in counselor education at The University of Alabama, was selected for a Fulbright Specialist grant in Education at Shenyang Normal University in China.

As a condition of the grant, Burnham will travel to China from June 8 until June 22 to present lectures at the graduate and undergraduate level, participate and lead seminars and develop academic curricula and education materials.

The purpose of this grant is to present a contemporary American school counseling model to the faculty and students at Shenyang Normal University and to give lectures on identifying children’s fears, bullying, cyberbullying, fear assessment, and counseling theories and skills.

Additionally, she will present a one-day workshop, a half-day workshop, create a specialized graduate student program on educational counseling, give a lecture on tenure and promotion at United States universities and consult for the existing school counseling program at Shenyang Normal University.

She will return in June 2013 for a follow-up of the revised school counseling program.

The grant was presented on behalf of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs at the Department of State and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
