Times-Picayune to shift focus to digital and away from print
Associated Press – May 28
Even in an increasingly digital world, last week’s news that the New Orleans Times-Picayune – one of the nation’s oldest newspapers – would stop publishing a daily edition came as a surprise. The change means New Orleans would become the largest metro area in the nation without a printed daily newspaper. The announcement Thursday was combined with similar moves at three major Alabama daily newspapers also owned by the Newhouse family group’s Advance Publications. The Birmingham News, the Press-Register in Mobile and The Huntsville Times will switch to publishing three days a week as part of a new focus on online news… “To get good quality information is not cheap,” said Jennifer Greer, chair of the journalism department at the University of Alabama. “What you are seeing is people trying to figure out a business model that works in a digital age.”

WEHT-ABC (Evansville, Ind.) – May 28
Hannah Fowler is a UA Sophomore who was in Tuscaloosa when a deadly tornado struck on April 27, 2011. Three months ago, Fowler’s family called their daughter to tell her that a tornado had struck their home in Indiana.  This story is mainly about the Fowlers rebuilding their home in Indiana, but Hannah and her father talk about what life was like after the Tuscaloosa storm. “My daughter was a freshman at the University of Alabama…” said Hannah’s father, I was fortunate enough not to hear it or feel it but i could definitely see it. But to come back and have it happen to your home it definitely hits a different spot.”
