UA Engineering Professor Receives Metallurgical Award

Dr. Ramana Reddy

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Ramana Reddy, ACIPCO Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at The University of Alabama, was recently named the recipient of a distinguished service award from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, or TMS, for his outstanding accomplishments.

Reddy was honored with the 2012 Alexander R. Scott Distinguished Service Award at the 141st TMS annual meeting and exhibition in Orlando, Fla., in March.

The Alexander R. Scott Distinguished Service Award recognizes a member’s outstanding contribution to TMS. The citation for the award reads, “For decades of enthusiastic service at all levels and for implementation of society-level strategic planning processes.”

Reddy’s teaching and research experience are in the field of chemical and materials engineering, particular in the areas of thermodynamics, materials synthesis, molten metal processing and renewable energy. He has published more than 350 papers and 24 books, including an undergraduate textbook on thermodynamics. He has also delivered more than 230 invited lectures and research presentations in 25 nations. Reddy has advised and mentored more than 52 graduate students and worked with 34 postdoctoral and research associates.

He was head of the department of metallurgical and materials engineering and associate director of Center for Green Manufacturing at UA. He was a visiting professor at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory at the University of California, the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay and Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago.

Reddy is an editor of the Journal for Manufacturing Science & Production and associate editor of the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion. He has received several awards such as the Service Award and the Best Science Paper Award from the extraction and processing division of TMS.

He is the recipient of the Henry Krumb Lecturer of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Milton E. Wordsworth Award for Extractive Metallurgy of SME and TMS Extraction and Processing Distinguished Lecture Award. Reddy is also a Distinguished Member (Fellow) of SME and a Fellow of the American Society for Metals International.

TMS is the professional organization encompassing the entire range of materials science and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 3,300 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz and Truman scholars.
