UA-Based Media Outlets Win Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Media stations housed in The University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences have won seven regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Alabama Public Radio won a total of five awards, while WVUA-TV won two.

For the fourth year in a row, APR won Best Overall Excellence (Pat Duggins, Ryan Vasquez, Maggie Martin, Stan Ingold). Additionally, it won Best Continuing Coverage for its Tuscaloosa tornado coverage; Best News Series (“Oil & Water: Recovering from the Spill,” Pat Duggins); Best Writing (“Oil & Water”); and Best Feature (“Coondog Cemetery,” Stan Ingold).

“I think the five Murrow awards points out the reach of the APR news team,” said Duggins, the news director. “Our tornado coverage went from Tuscaloosa to Phil Campbell. The ‘Oil & Water’ series was produced along the Gulf Coast. And Stan’s ‘Coondog Cemetery’ story took him from Northport to Tuscumbia. Many thanks for the generous support from the University and our listeners that makes it all happen.”

WVUA’s “Faces of the Storm” documentary won for Use of Video and Writing (Terri Brewer, Victoria Sheehan, Amy Eifler, Lynn Brooks, Tom Coiner, Alex Beatty, Jonathan Morris, Preston Sullivan, WVUA-TV Staff).

“I’m so proud to see the work our team put into this documentary recognized and celebrated,” said Roy Clem, station manager. “We were one of only two stations in the Birmingham market to win regional awards this year, and we were competing against some much larger markets. That’s quite an accomplishment.”

As a regional winner in these categories, APR and WVUA will now compete for national awards.
