The University of Alabama will host “UA Remembers: A Day of Service” on April 21 to commemorate the lives of the six students and one employee who died as a result of the tornadoes of April 27, 2011. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members will be invited to participate in projects that are being planned throughout the city of Tuscaloosa. Information on registration and projects will be shared in the coming weeks. UA departments and organizations planning commemorative activities should contact Deborah Lane, assistant to the president and assistant vice president for University Relations, at dlane@ur.ua.edu.
The Community Service Center is accepting nominations for the Volunteer of the Year award and the Outstanding Service Project of the Year award. The awards recognize students, groups and organizations that have shown devotion and dedication to providing service throughout the community. The University of Alabama will add a Friday night ceremony to commencement exercises this May to better accommodate more than 3,700 graduates and their families. Commencement exercises for students in the colleges of Communication and Information Sciences, Education, Human Environmental Sciences and Nursing will be at 6 p.m., Friday, May 4. Two ceremonies will be held Saturday, May 5, with students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Social Work receiving their degrees at 9 a.m. and students in the colleges of Commerce and Business Administration and Engineering receiving their degrees at 1:30 p.m. In addition, the School of Law will hold its commencement exercises at 5:30 p.m., May 5. All ceremonies will be in Coleman Coliseum.
Any student who is unable to attend the ceremony scheduled for his or her college may request to be accommodated at another ceremony.
The president’s reception for all graduates will be from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 4, at the President’s Mansion.

A team of seven students in the UA advertising and public relations senior campaigns class will host a video résumé workshop March 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. The event will help raise awareness of WolfSmart, an online job-board site that offers a different approach to job searching that incorporates next-generation technology. WolfSmart allows students to post video résumés online in addition to submitting traditional paper résumés. Participants will learn how to create video résumés and will also have the opportunity to upload video résumés onto the website. Free food and ink pens will be provided. UA’s student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will hold a First Amendment Free Food Festival March 28 at 11:30 a.m. on the southwest corner of the Quad across from Phifer Hall. The first 500 students who sign a passport to enter the “Glorious Kingdom of Roll Tidelberg” will be offered free lunches in exchange for relinquishing First Amendment rights. News media will be banned from inside the Kingdom. A goon squad will enforce any laws the dictator fancies. The First Amendment Free Food Festival, which has been held on more than 20 campuses nationwide since 2006, reinforces the importance of First Amendment freedoms and shows the dangers of taking these rights for granted. This is the first time the event has been held on the UA campus. Co-sponsors include the Student Government Association, the Academic Honor Council and the Corolla yearbook.
Students can help UA win a national championship in recycling during Recyclemania, which is in progress and will end April 6. Recyclemania is a recycling competition between universities in the United States and Canada held to raise awareness about recycling. Items can be placed in any of the numerous blue bins on campus. Students can volunteer to assist with the Mike Bissell run, which will be held March 23-24 at the Athlete’s Foot in Midtown Village. Bissell, a teacher at Tuscaloosa Magnet Elementary School, will run 100 miles on a treadmill in 24 hours to raise funds for a Tuscaloosa summer camp for children with diabetes.
