Al’s Pals at UA to Host Mardi Gras Parade for Area Youth

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Al’s Pals mentoring program at The University of Alabama is hosting a Mardi Gras parade at McKenzie Court Community Center in Tuscaloosa on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 3:30 p.m.

Al’s Pals is a youth mentoring program provided by UA students and it is a new focus of the UA Community Service Center in the area of arts, youth and education.

During the fall semester, some 150 UA students served as one-on-one mentors and student leaders providing an after-school program at the McKenzie Court Community Center. The mentors helped with homework, reinforced reading and math skills, and joined area youth in enrichment and recreational activities.

“An important aspect of the Al’s Pals mission is the joy of introducing the children at McKenzie Court to new and exciting experiences,” says Star Bloom, director of the Al’s Pals program.

Al’s Pals will celebrate the parade with Mardi Gras related activities, including music by the Voodoo Saints and opportunities to take photos with jester cutout masks. The UA students who serve as mentors in the program will walk in the parade with the children and take part in craft activities.

The event is open to the public.
