UA accounting program ranks No. 20 in annual professors’ survey

The undergraduate program at the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at the University of Alabama was ranked No. 20 in Public Accounting Report’s latest annual professors’ survey. The UA graduate program in accounting was ranked No. 24. The undergraduate program was No. 23 last year and in 2009, according to UA. The PAR ranking, now in its 30th year, is based on the votes of professors of accounting at U.S. colleges and universities. Culverhouse head Mary Stone says that being consistently highly ranked in the PAR survey affirms the quality of their faculty, and that the generosity of their alumni has been instrumental in allowing the program to support some of the finest educators in accounting education.
UA program features couple’s story of raising autistic son

A University of Alabama faculty member and his wife will tell their story of raising a son with autism Wednesday night as a part of an Honors College event series. Rick Dowling, an instructional developer for the UA Faculty Resource Center and an adjunct instructor in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, and his wife Suzanne, will share “Something About Sam, Autism Told Through the World of Sitcoms,” at 7 p.m. in Morgan Auditorium on the UA campus. . . .

As popular as social networking portal Facebook is these days, no amount of apps and widgets can remove the limitation of Facebook being a website. There are limited ways in how Facebook users can interact with each other as opposed to individuals who reside in multiuser virtual environments like Second Life. Shared space, collaborative environment, and room for user created content all facilitate creativity at the individual and group level that for (UA psychology professor Dr. Thomas) Ward and Sonneborn (2011), researchers at University of Alabama and Syracuse University, is worth taking a peek at in order to further our understanding about the nature of creativity.

UA hosts information session for undergraduate research

To increase undergraduate participation in research, the Honors College Assembly and the College of Arts and Sciences will host one of six Undergraduate Research Seminars on Monday, Jan. 30, at 6 p.m. in Lloyd Hall, Room 328. The seminar will be an information session on the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference. It will have the following speakers: Lauren Wilson, associate director of the Office of Sponsored Programs; Millie Jackson, UA Libraries; and award winners from the 2011 conference, including Emily Jones, Isabela Morales and Jessica Duke.
Lecture examines adoption of Haitian orphans

Jennifer Shoaff, a professor in the department of gender and race studies, will present a lecture tomorrow in Gorgas Library Room 205 at 3:30 p.m. on the adoption of Haitian children after a 2010 earthquake devastated the island. “In the Face of a Child: Haitian Orphans, (In)visible Mothers, and the Affective Economies of Deviance and Suffering,” will dive into the culture of often overlooked birth mothers as well the families who adopted Haitian children in the aftermath of the quake…Tim Murphy, associate professor of religious studies, said selflessness can be egoism of a different kind. “After the earthquake in Haiti, many people from other countries were adopting orphans,” he said.
Students have chance to do internships at Mercedes U.S. plant

In addition to Shelton State, the partnership involves the University of Alabama and Alabama industrial development training, 75 percent will be guaranteed jobs in projection and the very top of the class get an additional 18 months of training.
Residents hear from lawmakers at ‘Meet Your Legislators Night’

Tuscaloosa County residents had a chance Tuesday night to hear from their state legislators at the Bryant Conference Center during “Meet Your Legislators Night.” Local lawmakers spoke and took questions from voters concerning issues likely to come up during the upcoming legislative session, which begins Feb. 7. Just about every seat inside the Rast Room was occupied during the event, hosted by the League of Women Voters of Greater Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the UA Retirees Association.
