Tide celebrates 14th national title with fans

Nearly two years ago to the day, Nick Saban told a BCS celebration crowd: “This isn’t the end. This is the beginning.” Indeed, it was. With inclement morning weather lifting in time for the University of Alabama’s official celebration of the BCS national championship Saturday, Saban took the microphone once again to address thousands of fans who nearly filled the lower bowl on the West side of Bryant-Denny Stadium. But this time, it felt like more of an encore.

UA students go Hands On with service projects

University of Alabama students worked at several service projects Saturday as part of Hands On Tuscaloosa. The work was in part aimed to honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. and his example of public service and good work. Hands On Tuscaloosa, begun in August 2011, organizes volunteer work designed to familiarize student volunteers with community needs.

UA’s First Year Experience office accepting applications for new peer program

The University of Alabama’s First Year Experience office is taking applications for its new Peer Leaders program until Jan. 30. Peer Leaders will serve as mentors and role models for first-year undergraduate students and will help faculty and staff members facilitate courses designed to help first-year students adjust to and learn about the university.

Seatbelts save lives: Despite evidence, restraints not always worn

Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fa­talities in motor vehicle crashes, but reports from sev­eral recent traffic accidents in the area note that the drivers or passengers were not buck­led in. . . . “The chances of being killed in an injury crash is nine times higher if not restrained,” said David Brown, research associ­ate with the Center for Ad­vanced Public Safety at the University of Alabama.

Morgan jobless rate falls to 7.2%

Unemployment rates continued to drop in North Alabama in December, but some of the reduction reflected workers leaving the labor force, according to data released Friday by the state Department of Industrial Relations. . . . Some may have left the labor force because they tired of futile job searches, but other factors could play a part. “The loss in civilian labor force is not just due to people giving up on looking for work,” said Ahmad Ijaz, an economist with the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama. “It also includes people who retire or move out of the county or the state and other factors.

ACREcon 2012: 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center, 3660 Grandview Parkway, Birmingham. Annual statewide commercial real estate conference and expo organized by the Alabama Center for Real Estate at the University of Alabama. It is geared toward commercial real estate professionals, economic developers and companies and affiliates that provide goods and services to the commercial real estate industry. Speakers include: Rod Santomassimo, CCIM, author of “8 Traits of Top Producers”; Jim Wilson, chief operating officer and global director of client accounts with CBRE Group; and David Houle, author of “The Shift Age.” Registration fee is $150.

Campus MovieFest coming to UA

Campus MovieFest, the global film program, is once again bringing their film contest to the Alabama campus. CMF saw success last year, with 75 teams participating. This year, CMF hopes to increase that number. The competition’s goal is to further student interest and knowledge of filmmaking. It started at Emory College 10 years ago, and since then has expanded throughout 60 campuses across the world, in places such as Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Northridge High School students get a taste of college chemistry

Northridge science students are not in their own classroom, but on the University of Alabama campus, in a real lab. They’re getting the higher-ed chemistry experience “a lot more variety of experiments. That’s the goal of this pilot program, to better prepare local students before they get to the college level…”

BCS championship gear flies off store shelves

Managers in a few stores say BCS merchandise sales are higher than their Christmas sales. Tuscaloosa reporter Meredith Armstrong did some research to find out just how deep your pockets need to be if you want a closet full of Alabama National championship merchandise.

U.S. Postal Service offers commemorative envelopes of Alabama’s 14th national championship

The Postal Service’s Alabama district is now accepting orders for limited-edition commemorative envelopes honoring The University of Alabama’s championship win. These special envelopes are $10 each. There’s a double matted piece of artwork too. It’s available for $25.
