UA program helps Northridge High chemistry students
Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 20
Twenty-five Northridge High School students in an Advanced Placement chemistry class spent much of the day Thursday working in one of the University of Alabama’s Science and Engineering Complex laboratories. Martin Bakker, an associate professor of chemistry at UA who helped coordinate the day, said the goal of the activities was to help strengthen and expand the university’s outreach program. “We started comparing AP chemistry to my freshman chemistry classes, and strangely enough, they’re practically the same,” he said. “We had them here for a couple of experiments last semester, and that worked really well, so we said, ‘Hey, we’ve got these open labs, why not just come and do this?’ ”
