UA touts its efforts to improve Perry County

On Thursday night, about 40 University of Alabama students attended an Honors College presentation about the work the college is doing to assist Perry County residents and about opportunities to get involved. The presentation was given by professor Thomas Herwig’s Heroes in Faith and Justice in the 20th Century class. The event focused on the challenges facing one of the poorest counties in Alabama, while highlighting the potential of its people. Jacqueline Morgan, director of UA’s University Honors Program, said Perry County has become a “dear part of our lives.”…Morgan praised the work of Honors College students whose accomplishments in Perry County in recent years include restoring a cemetery and creating a digital database of those buried there, building a new playground, volunteering to teach the arts at Francis Marion High School and helping update the city of Marion’s Dial and Discover phone tour…

UA athletics director selected for hall of fame

University of Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore, whose association with the Crimson Tide as a student-athlete, coach and administrator spans more than 50 years, has been chosen for induction into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. “Having grown up in the State of Alabama, it’s a tremendous honor to be selected to the Hall of Fame,” Moore said. “I am so proud and, frankly, a little bit overwhelmed. I am very proud not just for myself, but for my family. I have always been well aware of the Hall of Fame and the great people in it. So to be connected with it in this way is certainly very special.”

‘A lot of pride’ at Super 6 Championships

Four weeks ago, the plaza outside Bryant-Denny Stadium was packed with thousands of roaring fans as the Crimson Tide football team marched through the Walk of Champions for the Game of the Century against LSU. Thursday saw no such crowd, but the fervor and passion was still evident as high school football teams whose players were marching to the game of their lives, strutted through the Walk of Champions into the state championships…After three games Thursday, three more games will be played today at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. “It’s going great,” said Gina Johnson, director of auxiliary services at game-day operations at the University of Alabama…

If you can’t find the holly and the jolly around town for the next few weeks, you’re either not looking or purposefully avoiding. The season of holiday celebrations rolls tonight with long-time music tradition “Hilaritas,” and rumbles on until nearly Christmas itself. Here’s a closer look at some of the biggest events in Tuscaloosa and Northport. Most are every-year traditions, but a few are this-season-only. .. . . “HILARITAS”: The University of Alabama School of Music’s annual show of holiday music, to be held at 7:30 p.m. today and 3 p.m. Sunday, in the Moody Concert Hall on campus, features the Alabama Jazz Ensemble and the University Singers.
