ANNOUNCEMENTS
A forum to present the concepts for the 2012 Campus Master Plan to the UA community will be held Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 5:30 p.m. in 133 Lloyd Hall. More information: Dan Wolfe at dwolfe@fa.ua.edu.
The first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System will occur at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission will conduct the test, which will last for approximately 30 seconds. The public will hear a message indicating “this is a test.” The audio message will be the same for everyone; however, due to limitations of the EAS, the video test message may not be the same and may not indicate “this is a test.” For more information about the test, click here.
An electrical shutdown for Lloyd Hall, W.B. Jones Hall and Smith Hall will occur this weekend in order to establish permanent electrical power to the new East Quad Energy Plant. Affected times are from Friday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. to Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7 a.m. and from Saturday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m. to Sunday, Nov. 13, at 7 a.m. The Alabama Museum of Natural History operating hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Miss University of Alabama program committee will host a candidate-interest meeting Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall. Prospective contestants will receive application information for the 2012 pageant scheduled for Feb. 18 at the Bama Theatre. Application deadline for contestants is Dec. 5. The Miss University of Alabama program is sponsored by the UA National Alumni Association and is a preliminary competition open to all female, full-time students at the Tuscaloosa campus. The pageant is an official preliminary pageant for the Miss Alabama and Miss America programs. The student named 2012 Miss UA will receive a one-year full-tuition scholarship, two book scholarships and other gifts. The Student Government Association has launched the Turn It Up Tide campaign to encourage students to show up and be loud for Crimson Tide athletic events.
The campaign includes free giveaways and other promotions and will continue through the remainder of the year. An away-game bus is planned for the Saturday, Nov. 12, football game in Starkville, Miss., between the Crimson Tide and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The University wants its faculty, staff and students to know safety procedures before an emergency happens. A summary of quick safety tips can be found on UA’s Emergency Preparedness website at http://www.beready.ua.edu. The site includes important terms to know, information for parents and contact information.
University resources on harassment, bullying, and diversity and sensitivity training are available online. The University of Alabama is committed to providing an environment that is free from illegal harassment based on race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran status. Students are encouraged to review the University’s online training tutorial on harassment (http://training.newmedialearning.com/psh/ua) (select student version) so that they can understand what is inappropriate behavior that should be reported. Details about to whom a student should report harassment are found in the policy located at http://eop.ua.edu/harrassment.html. The Student Code of Conduct, http://policies.ua.edu/conduct.html, also prohibits students from engaging in physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, stalking, intimidation, harassment, sexual misconduct or violence, coercion, or other conduct which threatens, harasses or injures a person. Students may file charges under the Student Code of Conduct with the Office of Judicial Affairs.
Students with complaints of harassment against faculty members, graduate assistants or other student employees, and staff members should contact the designated Harassment Resource Person in their department, school or college or in the department, school or college in which the alleged offender is employed. The name and location of the designated Harassment Resource Person can be obtained online from the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs website, http://eop.ua.edu/persons.html, or from the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs. Complaints of harassment against other students should be addressed to the Student Affairs designated Harassment Resource Person. Students may also receive assistance from the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, 171 Rose Administration Building, 205-348-5855; TDD, 205-348-5573.
The Counseling Center, http://counseling.ua.edu, and the Women’s Resource Center, http://wrc.ua.edu/index.cfm, are staffed with trained professionals who, in a confidential setting, will help students deal with problems related to harassment or bullying of any type. The University’s Crossroads Community Center, http://crossroads.ua.edu, provides campuswide leadership in areas of cultural programming and intercultural education and facilitates meaningful engagement among students, employees and community. One of its programs, Sustained Dialogue, engages students and other University community members who discuss probing subjects that divide the community (such as race, class, gender) and work toward collective action designed to address these issues. The Division of Student Affairs, the Office of Human Resources and academic units also routinely offer anti-discrimination and diversity sensitivity programs. Students, faculty members and staff are encouraged to participate in the wide range of diverse cultural programs, intercultural education, and other educational initiatives that enhance awareness and appreciation of cultural and individual diversity, promote community and prepare students for the global society in which they will live and work.
The campus community is reminded that fliers, posters, announcements or any material are not allowed to be attached to any post or utility pole on campus or directly to the outside of any campus building. Removal of these items can cause damage to the paint of the structures to which they are attached and also takes grounds crew away from their normal duties. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
The new UA majors website is now available at http://ua.edu/majors. Visitors to the site will find helpful information on all majors available to undergraduate students, including student-designed programs and New College depth studies. The site provides information like accreditation, career opportunities and what UA graduates are doing with their degrees. Users can access the DegreeWorks academic-planning tool and the Finish in Four program that will help students to stay on track to finish their degrees in four years.
STUDENT AFFAIRS
The Student Government Association announces the return of the Registration Help Hotline that students can call with any questions regarding class registration. The hotline is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The number to call is 205-348-8401.

The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness at the Student Health Center invites all students to follow the Smoking Cessation Campaign on Twitter @Time2Quit (use the hashtag #time2quitUA) through Nov. 17. The account will be used to encourage nonsmokers to encourage their smoker friends to kick the habit by promoting the Alabama Tobacco Quitline in anticipation of the Great American Smokeout. The Health Hut seeks interns for the Spring Semester 2012. The Health Hut is a daily outreach program of the department of health promotion and wellness in UA’s Student Health Center that educates students about healthy living. Applications are due on Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. Each position is a 90-hour-semester-long internship with a minimum of 5 hours each week consisting of staffing two 2-hour shifts in the hut and one 1-hour staff meeting. Soledad O’Brien, award-winning journalist and anchor for CNN’s special investigations unit, will speak at UA on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom as part of her national tour.
