Out of thousands of applications from around the country, 220 initiatives were selected to participate in the $25,000 funding category, and the Top 15 will receive funding.  CollegeFirst received the second-most votes in the country in the $25,000 category.

Based on the belief that all willing and academically motivated students deserve to succeed in rigorous, college-level experiences and the advantages they bring, CollegeFirst: An Advanced Placement Mentoring Initiative trains college and graduate students to implement a Pre-AP Summer Advanced Placement Institute for high school students enrolled in AP courses in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville.

CollegeFirst hosted its second annual Summer Advanced Placement Institute in June for some 215 high school students from six school districts in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville.  More than 70 college student mentors from UA, UAB and UAH led these students through three weeks of intensive lessons to better prepare them for AP Calculus, AP Chemistry and AP Biology in the upcoming school year.

CollegeFirst is a partnership with A+ College Ready, a division of the A+ Education Partnership.  A+ College Ready goals include increasing significantly the number and diversity of students taking and passing math and science AP courses and exams in high schools, and increasing the number of students attending and graduating from college with degrees in math and science.

CESR assists students in developing a distinctive definition of moral and civic maturity, making the values and skills of citizenship a hallmark of a UA education.
