Number of holiday travelers expected to increase

According to a study performed by the University of Alabama Center for Advanced Public Safety, “One primary finding indicates that Interstate crashes are up about 25 percent during the three most recent Thanksgiving-week years, reflecting travel trends of people driving in areas unfamiliar to them.”… Director of UA’s Center for Advanced Public Safety Dr. Allen Parrish said, “Leaving on Sunday reduces the risks significantly, and Thanksgiving Day is the best time to travel with very few vehicles on the roadways.”

University of Alabama offering dual enrollment for Baldwin County students

Baldwin County students with the right GPA can earn up to 30 hours of college credit from the University of Alabama through an early entrance online dual enrollment program starting in March, school officials said this week. Pam Henson, director of instructional support,…said the courses would be available for students in 10th grade who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The first class will be a “gateway” course, Henson said, with two hours of credit. After that, students can take a wide range of elective courses accumulating a maximum of 30 hours by the time they graduate, she said…”A motivated student can go into the University of Alabama with 30 credit hours already done,” Henson said.

Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger Food Drive Continues Through Friday
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Nov. 17
Beat Auburn Beat Hunger started as a canned food drive. Now it has evolved into a series of competitive events during football season to unite students, faculty, and the community. “Football is something we take very seriously here at the University of Alabama and I guess that Auburn takes it just as seriously as the Capstone. So with that said, the seriousness of football and hunger goes hand and hand with this whole initiative. Since 1994, the competition has raised nearly three million pounds of food for Alabamians without enough to eat. “We’ve looked back and 13 out of the 17 years the school that has won the food drive has gone on to win the Iron Bowl…this year’s goal is 250,000 pounds of canned foods.

Jefferson County bankruptcy another Alabama “punt”

“We’ve had that happen so often in Alabama. The state punts problems to the federal government or federal court,” said Bill Stewart, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Alabama…”It’s not something to brag about, like being number one in football,” Stewart said. “It’s a national disaster, but it hasn’t sunk in yet.”
