Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin to play free concerts with UA ensemble

Jeff Coffin, a Grammy award-winning saxophonist who currently plays in the Dave Matthews Band, will perform concerts with the University of Alabama jazz ensemble at the Moody Music Building on Tuesday and Wednesday. Coffin, on tour with his group the Mu’tet in support of their double live album “LIVE!,” will perform by himself with the Alabama Jazz Standards Combo on Tuesday and with the Mu’tet and the UA ensemble on Wednesday…

UA students and faculty get sneak peek at documentary about April 27 tornado

University of Alabama students are learning how broadcasters saved lives during last spring’s tornadoes in Tuscaloosa and Joplin. Students and faculty got a sneak peak at a new documentary called “The Signal That Saves.” It highlights the role of local meteorologists and their importance during a natural disaster. 

Tornado damaged property converted to farm

A Holt property ravaged by the April 27 tornado has been transformed into a community based “mission farm.”…Nancy Callahan, a lifelong Holt resident, donated the land being used for the project. She hopes that the land will become a part of area children’s lives…Riz Shakir, member of the Project Team Up Board of Directors and UA business professor, hopes this model will introduce young people to the economic benefits of farming. “Young people need to see they can make just as much money farming,” Shakir said. “The basic need will always be there.”… “We are committed to finding the real, meaningful ways for university and high school students to contribute,” Shakir said. “Mark and I are very committed to generally sustainable living.” Shakir encouraged UA students to volunteer at the farm and log their hours on SLPro….

Campaign hopes to bring Shaq to UA

LessThanUThink, a student-based initiative of The Century Council, an anti binge-drinking campaign, has launched a movement to bring former NBA player Shaquille O’Neal to campus next weekend. O’Neal attended Louisiana State University, the Crimson Tide’s football opponent Nov. 5. He recently partnered with The Century Council to fight binge drinking on college campuses…This week, as part of the group’s initiative to bring O’Neal to campus, they’ve launched a social media campaign…
