Competition feeds Capstone’s goal to beat hunger, Auburn
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 11
The first donations for the 18th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Drive arrived Monday at the University of Alabama campus, along with another pressing matter to be sorted out. Who’s going to get a pie to the face? At the kickoff event at the Ferguson Center for the six-week food drive, buckets were lined up on a table, each decorated with a campus leader’s face and title. Students, faculty and staff put a donation in the jar of the person whom they want to see get hit in the face with a pie. “So not only are we competing with Auburn, this kind of brings in an element of competition between everyone on the UA campus as well,” said Charlotte Brown, a UA student and the director of the annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger effort…Each year, bins are placed throughout the UA campus and Tuscaloosa for people to deposit nonperishable food. The drive is sponsored by UA’s Community Service Center and benefits the West Alabama Food Bank. Since the drive was started in 1994, the passion from the Auburn University-University of Alabama rivalry has been used to raise nearly 3 million pounds of food at each school. Auburn’s Beat Bama Food Drive benefits the East Alabama Food Bank.
