ANNOUNCEMENTS

Zimride is a ride-sharing network that enables UA students to find friends and classmates going to and from campus, away games and home. This new campus carpool system will help reduce parking congestion on campus and ease the financial burden of gas prices. To sign up for Zimride and connect with other UA students, log onto http://www.zimride.ua.edu.

Writing Center consultants are now available in Java City for drop-in appointments on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the fall semester. Java City is located on the first floor of Gorgas Library.

UA has revised its bicycle policy. The policy applies to all University faculty, staff, students and visitors who own, operate or store any pedal-drive, human-powered vehicles on the UA campus. The University Libraries and Gorgas Information Services are introducing a series of workshops for undergraduate students. The first will be held Sept. 21, 1-2 p.m., at 205 Gorgas Library and will focus on Twitter as an information source. Refreshments will be provided. Applications for Freshman Forum are due by Sept. 12 at 4:45 p.m. Applications are available at http://fye.ua.edu/freshforum.cfm. Freshman Forum is a unique leadership program supporting social and academic first-year students. Through Freshman Forum, first-year students can build a network of peers, faculty and staff across campus; gain an awareness of campus resources; and develop their personal leadership identities. The sign-up period for the High Tide Club is underway. High Tide Club is the best way for students to experience Alabama football in the upper deck. Members have reserved seating in the upper bowl for every home game. Additional benefits include a free concession coupon for all home games for the first 1,000 HTC members who enter the stadium; easier access to the stadium through the High Tide Club express entrance at Gate 30; an exclusive tailgate, membership wristband and free T-shirt for the LSU game; an opportunity to win $500 book scholarships; and other giveaways and prizes throughout the season. The UA chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will have an interest meeting at 7 p.m. today in 351 Gordon Palmer Hall. Free pizza will be provided. Students searching for on-campus employment can attend a free workshop from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 13 at the Sylvester Jones Resource Center in 336 Ferguson Student Center. Attendees will learn how to navigate the UA Human Resources’ website and what to include on their résumés. No registration is required. Students can receive critiques of their résumés by attending a “Short and Sweet” résumé review either on Sept. 14 or 15 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Sylvester Jones Resource Center in 336 Ferguson Student Center. UA students can baby-sit for other UA students who have children in exchange for earning community service hours recognized by the University. Participants in the Sitters for Service program have the opportunity to earn 20, 30 or 40 hours of community service during the semester. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Students will work with various organizations to help Tuscaloosa recover from the tornado as well as work on other community needs.
