HOMECOMING

Homecoming week is Oct. 2-8. This year’s homecoming theme is “The Tradition Rolls On.” The highlight of the week will be the UA football game against Vanderbilt on Oct. 8. This year, a group of first responders will serve as homecoming parade grand marshals in honor of their service following the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa in April. The late registration deadline for submitting applications for Homecoming Queen is 9 p.m. on Sept. 28. Applications can be found at http://homecoming.ua.edu in the Red Book link on page 8 or at http://vote.ua.edu. Applications and a $65 registration fee should be turned in to 356-D Ferguson Student Center. Applicants who are approved during the late registration period may start campaigning on Sept. 29. All currently enrolled, full-time students with a minimum 2.5 GPA and a total of 64 earned credit hours at UA are eligible to apply. The third annual homecoming talent show will be held on Oct. 4 on the steps of the Gorgas Library. A mandatory meeting for everyone who wants to participate will be held Sept. 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in 313 Ferguson Student Center. Students can click here to purchase tickets for the Homecoming Step Show sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Tickets can also be purchased at the NPHC homecoming table in the Ferguson Student Center. Student tickets are $15 with identification. The show will be held in Foster Auditorium on Oct. 7. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Parking will be limited. Shuttle service will be provided to Foster Auditorium from the soccer-field-parking lot on Fourth Street. ANNOUNCEMENTS

The door to the Ferguson Center computer lab is now accessible only through the swipe of an Action Card. During the center’s normal operating hours, the lab is available for UA students, faculty and staff. More information: April Sanders, facilities manager, at asanders@sa.ua.edu or 348-7487.

The Student Health Center encourages students to get a flu shot or the FluMist this year. Stop by or make an appointment by calling 348-APPT (2778).

UA students, including victims of the April storms, can receive free legal assistance from the UA School of Law Civil Clinic. Legal matters for which students can seek assistance include landlord-tenant disputes, other housing issues, automobile accidents, insurance matters, property matters, contract issues, consumer problems and even some municipal violations. Students can call 348-4960 for appointments.

The deadline for students to apply for Career Connection is Oct. 7. Career Connection is a program developed through UA’s Professional Staff Assembly that connects students with UA professionals who hold similar career interests. Each student establishes a relationship with a UA professional through a short-term job-shadowing process. Students and professionals will be matched according to the students’ fields of study and the professionals’ areas of knowledge. No formal template or timetable exists for the program; students and their assigned professionals determine the manner and length of visits and meetings. Click here to apply. STUDENT AFFAIRS

Applications for Leadership UA are due at 4:45 p.m. on Oct. 7 and are available on the Student Involvement and Leadership website. Click here for an application. Applications for the 2012 Avanti Team are now available at http://www.orientation.ua.edu/avanti and will be accepted through Oct. 10. The Avanti Team supports the recruitment objectives of the University through service with Bama Bound Orientation and other events throughout the academic year. EVENTS

Students can show how they use UA libraries and at the same time have the opportunity to win prizes. Student teams are invited to make three-minute movies promoting UA library resources and services. Movies can be in any style. Click here for more information. Registration deadline is Sept. 29 at 5 p.m.

The Honors College Assembly will sell chicken and biscuits on Sept. 28 from 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. outside Bidgood Hall, Tutwiler Hall and the Northeast Commuter Parking Lot. All proceeds are being donated to help rebuild houses destroyed by the April 27 tornado.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

UA’s Disaster Relief Internship Program is committed to rebuilding Tuscaloosa while providing students with unique opportunities to receive course credit for their aid in the tornado-relief efforts. Students serve internships with various local agencies involved in the relief effort. Internships are suited to students’ academic backgrounds and prior volunteer and work experiences.
