Student Affairs Hall of Fame Honors Three UA Leaders

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Three noted leaders on campus were honored recently for their service to The University of Alabama as 2011 inductees into the UA Student Affairs Hall of Fame.

The 2011 inductees are Dr. Glenda K. Guyton, former assistant to the dean of women, Dr. Thomas S. Strong, former dean of students, and Dr. Joab L. Thomas, UA president from 1981-1988.

Guyton began her career in student affairs at UA as assistant to the dean of women and has dedicated her career to impacting the future of college students. She served as the adviser and sponsor of several women’s student organizations and the University’s cheerleaders. Today, she continues to serve students as president of Women of the Capstone, a group that mentors first-generation college students. She also advises the UA Mortar Board chapter and The Other Club while coordinating outreach efforts for Capstone Village.

Strong is recognized by students, alumni and colleagues for offering extraordinary care and support for students throughout his stellar 38-year career at UA. In addition to being the dean of students, Strong was associate vice president for student affairs, and he provided administrative leadership for an extensive list of areas on campus including Student Recreation, Greek Life, Student Media and several others. His establishment of the Crimson Care program and the former Learning Skills Center are among the many examples of how he assisted students.

Thomas brought to campus a renewed emphasis on academic enhancements and a commitment to UA’s emergence as a major research institution. Under his leadership, the University upgraded admission standards, began the Interim Term, encouraged UA’s inclusion in the National Student Exchange consortium and established additional scholarship opportunities for academically-achieving students. He also launched an extensive building program that included new facilities for the School of Music, College of Commerce and Business Administration, and construction of the Paul W. Bryant Center and Museum.

Selection into the UA Student Affairs Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions to student life and culture at the Capstone.

“After their graduations, students often tell me that experiences they had in their clubs and organizations were some of the best things that ever happened to them, and they credit the professional mentors for helping them in discovering their passions and leadership potential,” said Dr. Mark Nelson, vice president for student affairs and vice provost. “In essence, that is what student affairs is all about – changing lives.”
