ANNOUNCEMENTS

A test of the outdoor Public Address System will be conducted Aug. 18 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Each speaker will be tested at least one time, maybe more. The test could be loud at times.

On Aug. 17, the wireless registration information will be reset, and students no longer affiliated with the University will be removed from the system. Users who registered their laptops and mobile devices on the UA wireless network within the last 30 days will not be dropped. All others will have to reregister. Students who are returning to campus and wish to use a laptop or mobile device must complete a simple, one-time registration. Users will be prompted to complete this registration on their first attempts to open a Web browser. They must enter their myBama usernames and passwords, accept the user agreement and restart their devices to complete the registration process. For information regarding the registration of game consoles, click here. ResNet users will be prompted to register their desktops as well as their laptops and mobile devices. For problems or questions, call the Office of Information Technology’s IT Service Desk at 348-5555 or email ITSD@ua.edu.

A service for UA students and employees will be held Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Palmer Lake to remember the impact the April 27 tornado had on the community and UA’s response to that tragedy, and to celebrate moving forward together as a UA family. During the event, the University will present five awards. The annual Acts of Kindness Heroes Award honors students, employees, alumni and members of the community who have made a significant difference in the lives of others. A reception, featuring food from some of the restaurants damaged or destroyed by the storm and from Bama Dining, will follow the service at Ferguson Plaza. In the event of rain, the program will move to the Ferguson Center ballroom.

Several UA offices will be open special hours during Move-In Days. Action Card and Parking Services, both located in the Student Services Center, will be open on Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Aug. 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. University Supply Store hours will be as follows: Aug. 20, the Ferguson and Tutwiler branches will be open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and the law school branch will be open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. On Aug. 21, both the Ferguson and Tutwiler locations will be open 12:30-5 p.m. Students should take advantage of these special hours, when lines tend to be shorter.

Tuscaloosa Transit Authority, in partnership with Crimson Ride, now provides a new route from the downtown Intermodal Facility at 601 23rd Ave. to the UA campus and back. The bus runs a complete route each half hour from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m. each Monday through Friday during the year except on holidays. UA students, faculty and staff can park free of charge at the downtown facility and ride the bus free of charge with a UA Action Card. For route details, visit http://crimsonride.ua.edu.

The University conducted a test of its emergency-notification system, UA Alerts, on Aug. 3. Students should update their contact information on myBama if they did not receive notification through their cellphones or myBama email accounts. To view and make changes to their information online, students can log in to their myBama accounts at http://mybama.ua.edu. To get more information and view a video of step-by-step instructions for updating information on myBama, click here.

Protect yourself and your property by becoming informed and using good judgment. Always lock up valuable items. Lock your dorm or apartment door, even when you are home. Lock your car. Lock your bike. Use a locker and lock at the Student Recreation Center. If you work in a University office, lock your purse and other valuables in a cabinet or drawer. It takes practically no time to lock up, even if you are just leaving for a moment. University Police recommend that during school breaks you take computers, stereos and other valuables home with you. For more information on preventing theft, refer to the UA Safer Living Guide.
