Helping youth after disasters subject of workshop in Tuscaloosa

A workshop at University of Alabama is focusing on reconstructing communities with an emphasis on children in the wake of the tragic tornadoes. Tuscaloosa and Jefferson County business, government, and neighborhood leaders, along with faith based groups attended the workshop in hopes of preparing disaster plans to deal with youth and families. The workshop was led by Dr. Adenrele Awotona with the ‘Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities After Disaster’ at the University of Massachusettsat Boston.

UA students donate 240 blankets

The University of Alabama’s Student Government Association on Thursday donated 240 blankets to Project Blessings, a local nonprofit organization. The SGA received the new blankets three weeks ago from an organization called Wrap Up America, which provided them thanks to monetary donations from students at the University of Kentucky…SGA President Grant Cochran said the University of Kentucky’s SGA contacted him a week or two after the April 27 storm to say they had been working with Wrap Up America for a few years and wanted to use that relationship to help those affected by the tornadoes…UA’s SGA chose to donate the blankets to Project Blessings, and Cochran said more shipments are expected in the coming months as more donations come in to Wrap Up America…

University of Alabama takes over WHIL-FM public radio in Mobile

Public radio station WHIL-FM 91.3 will begin transmitting today to its Mobile area audience from its new home at the University of Alabama. Elizabeth Brock, director of the Center for Public Television and Radio at the university, said the official takeover would occur at 3 p.m. At that time, Brock said, “We’re going to welcome Mobile into the listening family.” The move comes after the Federal Communications Commission approved the sale of WHIL from Spring Hill College to the university. Spring Hill sold WHIL to Alabama for $1.1 million. The university has retained the WHIL call letters…

As Tuscaloosa Rebuilds, Exodus Of Immigrants Makes Job Harder

… And there will be lots of construction jobs. The Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama estimates there will be about 51,700 jobs in cleanup and rebuilding — at least in the short-term — related to the tornadoes.

UA Student Wins Scholarship for 3-D Film on April Tornado

The work of a University of Alabama student has earned an award in Hollywood…Burgin produced this 3-D, short-movie of the April tornado…Burgin won a $5,000 scholarship.
