…Relief funds set up immediately after the storm by disaster relief agencies such as the Red Cross and United Way have seen very positive results. The UA Acts of Kindness Fund, created to help students and staff who were affected by the storm, has also raised a large amount of money for victims…According to a news release from the University, over $2 million have been donated to the UA Acts of Kindness Fund, which was established by the University to provide financial assistance to students and faculty who were affected by the tornado. “The purpose of the Acts of Kindness Fund is to provide appropriate relief to faculty, staff and students of The University of Alabama who experience a qualifying emergency or hardship, such as a tornado…or any circumstance which calls for immediate action following a sudden and unexpected happening,” the UA website states. Students and faculty in need may submit a request for assistance through the University website. Applications are reviewed by a committee which has been appointed by UA’s President Witt. “The program may be used to help employees and students pay grocery bills, rent or mortgage payments, electric, gas and medical bills,” the UA website states…

Business recovery meeting today at Bryant

Local tax, legal and insurance experts will make presentations and answer questions at a special business recovery information meeting today at 5:30 p.m. in Sellers Auditorium at the Bryant Conference Center. Businesses in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas that incurred physical damage or economic injury during the April tornadoes should attend…Also, the chamber has established the Business Recovery Information Center at the chamber office at 2200 University Blvd. in Tuscaloosa to link affected businesses with the SBA, FEMA, the University of Alabama Small Business Development Center and other resources on an ongoing basis.
Alabamians in D.C. area collecting supplies for tornado relief trip

The National Capital Chapter of the University of Alabama Alumni Association is accepting donations for another road trip to Alabama for tornado relief. Their recommended list includes feminine hygiene products, baby supplies, batteries, tools (crowbar to chainsaw), paper products, nonperishable foodstuffs, baby/toddler summer clothes, blue jeans, etc. The group is also accepting gas cards or donations to help pay their way. Chapter president Timothy Williamson said they’re loading up two box trucks to deliver the supplies over Memorial Day weekend…
UA engineering professor says there are serious problems with cookware

He found what he believes are serious problems in the kind of glass used by the dish’s manufacturer Anchor Hocking. “The manufacturers have switched to soda lime cylicate glass and it doesn’t hold up to changes in temperature one would find in a kitchen.”
