GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jack Warner Parkway will be closed April 9, 7 a.m.-3 p.m., for the 2011 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship. The finish line is at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. People will not be able to exit the campus to the north during much of the day on Saturday.
UA students can complete a five-minute survey to provide input regarding the update of the Campus Housing Master Plan. Click here to take the survey before the April 17 deadline.
Details and dates for the sale of student football tickets for the 2011 season have been finalized. For students who will return in the fall, the sale will occur over five days based on each student’s credit hours. These are UA hours and do not include transfer or AP hours. Following is a timeline that explains what each student needs to do in order to participate in the online sale.
April 5-6
All currently enrolled students should go to the home tab on http://mybama.ua.edu and click on “Opt in to Purchase Student Football Tickets” in the upper left-hand corner. Students must opt in to be eligible for the student sale. Students can do this anytime between 8:30 a.m. CDT on April 4 and 4:30 p.m. on April 6.
April 8
Students who indicated they were interested in tickets during the opt-in period will receive an email letting them know their sale dates. Sale days will be based on total credit hours.
April 18-22
Each student’s credit hours determine which day a student will participate. For each day, the University will allocate tickets based on the percentage that each group represents in the total group of students. For example, if 27 percent of interested students fall between 31 and 60 hours, 27 percent of the tickets will be allocated for that day. Following is the breakdown for each sales day:
Monday, April 18: graduate and professional students
Tuesday, April 19: 91 or more credit hours
Wednesday, April 20: 61-90 credit hours
Thursday, April 21: 31-60 credit hours
Friday, April 22: 0-30 credit hours
Student packages will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis each day, with a limit of one package per student. Contact the Alabama Ticket Office at 348-2262 with questions.
New campus-based students (freshmen, transfer, graduate, others) and students who receive undergraduate degrees from UA in Spring 2011 and who are admitted to a graduate program after March 25 will be included in the new-student sale that begins June 1.
STUDENT AFFAIRS
A large banner will be on the Quad in front of Gorgas Library for UA students to sign in support of the Student Government Association Lobby Boards to fund higher education. The banner will be mailed to local representatives to encourage more funding and opportunities for students at UA. More information: Chip Harrison.
The individual events team of the Alabama Forensic Council will hold open auditions for new members on April 15, 8-11 a.m. and 2-7 p.m., in 222 Reese Phifer Hall. Each student should be prepared to make a speech or presentation he or she has done in the past or present a reading of literature. Each audition is five minutes maximum. Interested students may visit 210-A Reese Phifer Hall before April 14 to register. More information: Frank Thompson.

UA considers the safety of its students one of its highest priorities. And one way students can stay safe is to use the buddy system at night: Be sure to walk in groups in well-lighted areas. “The Hog: A Health Blog” is a new community-oriented health blog provided by the Health Sciences Library at UA. The Hog is located at http://healthblog.ua.edu.
ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
Students staying in Tuscaloosa or going home to the Birmingham or Huntsville areas this summer can earn honors credit through the CollegeFirst Summer Academic Institute. Registered students will learn how to be pre-advancement placement instructors and tutors in biology, calculus or chemistry. They will then tutor high school students planning to take AP courses. UA students can teach chess in local elementary and middle schools while studying the academic and social benefits the game holds for children. “Every Move Counts: A Chess in Education Project” is an initiative of UA’s Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility. EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Honors Week continues through April 8 as UA recognizes the achievements of outstanding students and faculty. The Tapping on the Mound ceremony will be held April 8 at 1:30 p.m. on the Mound at the west side of the UA Quad. Campuswide honoraries Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board, Blue Key National Honor Society and Anderson Society will induct new members at this time. Click here for more information.
A barefoot concert featuring Christiane Smedley and other local artists will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at the Ferguson Plaza. A barefoot walk from the Quad to the Ferguson Plaza will occur at 4:45 p.m. Both events are part of “One Day Without Shoes,” hosted by the UA TOMS student organization.
Higher Education Day will be held April 7. UA students will ride buses to Montgomery and meet with legislators and other students across the state about the importance of funding for higher education. The event is free for all students and includes transportation and lunch. The “We Speak Up” photography campaign will be held through April 8, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Ferguson Student Center. Participants can have their photographs taken and submit personal messages explaining why they are against sexual assault. The University of Alabama Honors College and Housing and Residential Communities will host Ken Rudin, political editor for National Public Radio, on April 19 at 6 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Graduate Parent Support is hosting a Summer Camp Expo at the softball fields and tennis courts on April 29 for students who are parents and for families in the Tuscaloosa community. Sustained Dialogue, a group on campus, is bringing Mental Health Monologues to UA for the first time. Mental Health Monologues is a project that collects anonymous essay submissions from students on campus about their personal struggles with mental illness. The submissions are then used as monologues performed by actors during a staged performance. Sustained Dialogue’s objective is to erase the stigma surrounding the discussion and treatment of mental illness. People can submit their stories through April 8 by clicking here. The Society of Physics Students is hosting a chess tournament on April 9 in 109 Gallalee Hall. Pre-registration is $5, and onsite registration is $10. A $50 prize will be awarded to the top, non-faculty participant. Other noncompetitive games will be available to play. All proceeds will benefit the UA chapter of the Society of Physics Students. The UA Department of Theatre and Dance will present “The Baby Dance” and “Big River.” “The Baby Dance” will be held April 11-16 at 7:30 p.m. and April 17 at 2 p.m. at Allen Bales Theatre. “Big River” will be held April 18-23 at 7:30 p.m. and April 24 at 2 p.m. at Marian Gallaway Theatre.
Apwonjo is hosting “Please Don’t Stop the Music” at the Student Recreation Center on April 16. Andrew Briggs, founder of Freedom In Creation, will speak at 8 p.m. A dance party will be from 8:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. The cost for teams who register by April 7 is $10 per team member. A “Take Back the Night” march and rally will be held April 19 at 6 p.m. at the Crimson Promenade to support the end of violence against women.
