Students have until 7 p.m. today to cast their votes for candidates in the Student Government Association elections. Click here to view candidate profiles. Voting is online at https://mybama.ua.edu.

Crimson Ride will run regular service until March 11 at 6 p.m. Bus service will resume normal hours on March 21 at 7 a.m. The 348-RIDE (7433) service will operate until March 13 at 7 a.m., with normal operations resuming on March 20 at 7 a.m.

The Office of Dean of Students recently launched an initiative specifically for students who are in foster care, are wards of the state or are emancipated. People interested in being a part of the program can contact Dr. Lowell Davis at 348-3326.

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Committee chair applications are due March 9. The SOURCE board of governors is taking applications for directors and team positions. The director positions are paid positions through the SOURCE and include the director of communications, director of organization leadership, director of organization outreach and director of fiscal affairs. The SOURCE is accepting applications from registered student organizations for the Student Organization Spring Awards Banquet. The banquet highlights the achievements of student organizations and their leaders for the 2010-11 academic year. Students are invited to submit nominations for the Penny Allen Award. The nomination deadline is March 11. The award recognizes one UA student and one UA faculty or staff member who have made a significant contribution to student life at the University. Criteria, in order of importance, include service and dedication to students, leadership activities, professional and other activities, and lack of past recognition. Student nominees must also be incoming juniors or seniors and have GPAs of at least 3.0. Nomination forms are available at http://ferguson.ua.edu/pennyallenaward.cfm. The School of Social Work and the Alabama Union Board of Governors established the award in honor of the late Sara Bell Penrod “Penny” Allen, a former chair of the School of Social Work undergraduate program.

The Academic Honor Council is accepting nominations for the 2011 Faculty/Staff Award. The award recognizes a faculty or staff member who promotes integrity in the classroom and inspires students to live moral and ethical lives. Applications are now available for the 2011-12 class of Documenting Justice, a two-semester course in documentary filmmaking. The course gives UA students of all majors opportunities to explore social justice issues in Alabama or around the world through the creation of original, nonfiction films. Applications are due March 11, but early submittal is recommended. While the course is designed for non-film majors, those with production experience are also encouraged to apply. Undergraduate credit for Documenting Justice is available through telecommunication and film, anthropology, New College and Honors College. Graduate credit is available for law students and through telecommunication and film. UA undergraduate students graduating in May are invited to nominate a teacher from their high schools for the Capstone Inspiring Educator Award. The award recognizes U.S. high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support. Winners will be recognized each year during UA Commencement in spring. Nominations are due by April 1; applications can be found at http://inspiringteacher.ua.edu. Bama Dining and the UA Writing Center have teamed up to encourage students to visit the Writing Center for help with their writing. Students have the opportunity to win free food and drinks from Stewart’s Corner by using the free tutoring services of the Writing Center, which is located in 322 Lloyd Hall. Stewart’s Corner is located on the first floor of Lloyd Hall and features several eateries.

The Honors College Assembly encourages students with ideas about fostering change, improving the campus or improving the community to connect with “Make It Happen.” Make It Happen seeks to aid emerging student leaders in implementing ideas through various resources and potential funding allocations. The UA Events Calendar, a central resource used to promote a variety of campus events, was recently revamped with a streamlined interface and increased functionality. The new calendar is located at http://events.ua.edu. The calendar is open to submissions by all faculty, staff and students for events that are officially sponsored by UA organizations or departments. Any college, division or department interested in establishing a dedicated category on the UA Events Calendar should contact the Office of Web Communications at webmaster@ur.ua.edu with that request.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The department of modern languages, the French Club and the French House will host a Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball today from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Ridgecrest South atrium. Guests will enjoy French and Mardi Gras music, dancing, Cajun food and prizes for best costume and best dancer. Tickets are $5 and available in B.B. Comer Hall. More information: Florina Matu.

A “Sinless Splurge” fundraiser for the men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams will held on March 9 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cold Stone Creamery on University Boulevard. A live band, Lottie and The Finest Hour, will perform. More information: Paige Niewerth.

The Women’s Resource Center and the Counseling Center will host “What Makes You Beautiful” on March 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center. The campaign seeks to help women in the UA community look past mainstream definitions of beauty. Photographs of UA women will be taken and publicly displayed along with each woman’s personal definition of what makes her beautiful. Inspirational quotes about beauty will also be distributed. The Women’s Resource Center is sponsoring the “Women Who Dared” poster campaign through March 31. The campaign provides students, faculty and staff with numerous illustrations of women who have achieved great heights in their areas of expertise, from environmentalism to medical research. In conjunction with the poster campaign, Women’s History Month table tents will be placed throughout the campus dining areas to provide the UA community with trivia about women’s history. Throughout April, the UA Women’s Resource Center will display the “Healing the Wounded Heart” art exhibit in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Students affected by violence, both directly and indirectly, are invited to create a “heART” piece for the exhibit. Through the wounded heart program, survivors and those who work with survivors have an opportunity to use art as a therapeutic device to express the influence of violence and the strength gained through healing. Each participant will receive a wooden heart as a canvas for expression. The Women’s Resource Center will begin distributing the hearts on March 1. The finished pieces will be collected on March 30 for display. Participants can get a heart from the Women’s Resource Center. To participate, contact Maria Perez-Fisher at 348-5040.

The Student Alumni Association and the Beta Delta chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity will host the annual RISE and Shine Charity Golf Tournament on April 15. Proceeds will benefit UA’s RISE School for exceptional children and their typically developing peers. A small portion of the proceeds will also fund two student-leadership scholarships awarded annually by the SAA. The School of Law will host the Race to the Courthouse 5K Run on March 26. Preregistration ends on March 21. Registration on the day of the race begins at 8 a.m. at the law school parking lot. Race begins at 9 a.m. Top overall male and female winners will each receive a $100 cash prize. All preregistered runners and the first 15 participants to sign up on race day are guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt. Runners and walkers are welcome. Creative Campus is seeking participants for its Artistry on Wheels show to be held on April 9. The show celebrates the intersection of art and machinery and features a competition between students from The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Shelton State Community College and Stillman College. The final viewing of “War Don Don” will be held March 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Theater. The film chronicles the trial of an accused war criminal in the International Criminal Court in Sierra Leone and is part of Apwonjo’s African film series. More information: Caitlin Trotter.

The Women’s Resource Center will host Lunafest at the Bama Theatre on March 24 at 7 p.m. Lunafest is a national touring festival of short films by, for and about women. A silent auction fundraiser and reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance or at the door and cost $12 for students, $18 for faculty and staff, and $20 for the general public.
