Former Birmingham News sportswriter Clyde Bolton honored at University of Alabama
Birmingham News – March 4
Clyde Bolton, a former sports reporter and columnist for The Birmingham News, received the University of Alabama’s career award for non-fiction Thursday.  Bolton, the author of 16 books, was to receive the Clarence Cason Award in Nonfiction Writing from UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences at a dinner in his honor…The award is named for Clarence Cason, the founder of journalism education at UA and author of the 1935 book “90 Degrees in the Shade.” Recipients include Rick Bragg, Diane McWhorter, Howell Raines and E.O. Wilson.

Alabama home sales dip slightly in January, University of Alabama center says

…The Center for Real Estate Research says home sales across the state totaled 2,052 in January, down from 2,072 in the same month in 2010. December sales totaled 2,674, meaning January sales were more than 23 percent lower. The center said sales prices also fell in January compared to prior year figures…

Hopefuls to square off in two debates

On Sunday and Monday, UA students will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet with the two candidates for Student Government Association president, the only contested executive position in the upcoming election. The first debate, which will be held on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom, will also give students the opportunity to meet with the candidates running for senate positions on campus…The debate is sponsored by the University’s Residence Hall Association and students with questions for the candidates should submit them through the group’s Facebook page. On Monday, from 7 to 8 p.m. in The Zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium, SGA presidential candidates will square off for the final time…

Prospective graduate students to soon face more stringent GRE

…Elizabeth Aversa, professor and director of the School of Library and Information Sciences, said a student’s score on the examination is not an element that totally excludes an applicant unless the score is truly terrible. “If all other parts of the application are good—undergraduate and previous graduate GPA, statement of purpose, professional and academic references—we may ask the applicant to retest and to reapply to the Masters program of choice,” Aversa said…Lisa Lindquist Dorr, associate professor and director of graduate studies in the department of history, said what she would like to emphasize is that the GRE score of a graduate applicant is merely one small part of a graduate application. “While it offers a quick and dirty way to differentiate among students from a wide variety of institutions, it otherwise doesn’t tell us a whole lot about an applicant’s abilities,” Dorr said…

Alpha Omicron Pi hosts 5k Run for Arthritis Foundation

Sakura Festival displays Japanese culture

The 25th annual Sakura Festival will take place throughout the month of March around the Tuscaloosa community. The festival highlights Japanese culture through music, art and education.  With the help of the Tuscaloosa Sister Cities Commission, the festival has become a part of the Tuscaloosa culture during the past 25 years…

Mobile Mardi Gras Queen is a senior at UA

UA doctoral student to perform with The Capitol Sounds in Montgomery concert
