All classes in Alston Hall are cancelled for Tuesday evening, Feb. 22 due to a power outage. Every effort is being made to restore power as quickly as possible.
Two 348-RIDE (7433) vans are available until 7 p.m. today to transport students from the usual 348-RIDE area to the polling place at Calvary Baptist Church. Students who wish to vote in the local referendum can call 348-RIDE to get a ride to or from the polling place.
The 2012 Campus Master Plan Update process is underway. The University community is invited to participate in the planning process, beginning with an online survey. Deadline for completing the survey is March 11. Click here for more information and to access the survey. UA undergraduate students graduating in May are invited to nominate a teacher from their high schools for the Capstone Inspiring Educator Award. The award recognizes U.S. high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support. Winners will be recognized each year during UA Commencement in spring. Nominations are due by April 1; applications can be found at http://inspiringteacher.ua.edu. The Student Government Association and Intercollegiate Athletics have joined together to offer a unique opportunity for UA students who join the Crimson Tide Rewards program. Students who are in the top 15 percent in points and who have attended a minimum of 30 events will be eligible to purchase 2011 football tickets without going through the student ticket sale in the summer. Intercollegiate Athletics will tally student points after the baseball game on May 8 and notify those students who are eligible to purchase the tickets. The Honors College Assembly encourages students with ideas about fostering change, improving the campus or improving the community to connect with “Make It Happen.” Make it Happen seeks to aid emerging student leaders in implementing ideas through various resources and potential funding allocations. Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 11 at the Bryant Conference Center. Lock it up. Personal safety starts with you. Protect yourself and your property by becoming informed and using good judgment. Always lock up valuable items. Lock your dorm or apartment door, even when you are home. Lock your car. Lock your bike. Use a locker and lock at the Student Recreation Center. If you work in a University office, lock your purse and other valuables in a cabinet or drawer. It takes practically no time to lock up, even if you are just leaving for a moment. University Police recommend that during school breaks you take computers, stereos and other valuables home with you. For more information on preventing theft, refer to the UA Safer Living Guide.
University Recreation is offering a spring break personal training special to help students in their efforts to pursue healthier lifestyles. Students can sign up for 12 sessions plus one free nutritional consultation session or an extra personal training session for $245. Students can sign up for the special through March 11 at the Student Recreation Center. The Honors College will host Kavita Ramdas Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library as part of the college’s faculty-in-residence series. Ramdas provides leadership for the largest grant-making foundation in the world that is focused exclusively on supporting international women’s human rights. More information: Rick Dowling.
The president and CEO of the Professional Convention Management Association will discuss career opportunities with select UA students Feb. 23 at both 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Child Development Research Center, room 33. Deborah Sexton, a 30-year veteran of the meetings and convention industry, will visit campus as part of the UA College of Human Environmental Sciences‘ Spring Hospitality Series designed for students in its restaurant, hotel and meetings management program. In celebration of African-Heritage History Month, selections of items from the “Black Americana” collection, a part of the “A.S. Students are invited to the next Safe Zone training session on Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon in 131 Lloyd Hall. The Safe Zone program trains people who are interested in being allies for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community at UA. The program provides information about the coming-out process and the challenges LGBTQ students face, as well as resources for dealing with discrimination, harassment and homophobia in the classroom and on campus. The Women’s Resource Center and the Ferguson Student Center will host a day trip to Gee’s Bend on Feb. 26. The rural community located on the Alabama River southwest of Selma is nationally known for its multigenerational quilting technique in the style of traditional African-American quilts and for invoking the style of Amish quilts and modern art. Attendees will take a ferry ride, discover Black Belt treasures and investigate the historic Gee’s Bend region. More information and reservations: the Women’s Resource Center at 348-5040.
Local student artists may play their original music during a 12-hour music festival, Tuscapalooza, on WVUA-FM 90.7 on April 3 from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. Artists will receive a time slot between 30 minutes to one hour. Events include a bake sale at the Ferguson Student Center, Feb. 28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; “In the Red Day,” March 2, on which students, faculty and staff are asked to wear red to represent pay among genders; and the “$tart $mart Pay Negotiation Workshop,” March 3, 2-4 p.m., 309 Ferguson Student Center, which is open to juniors, seniors and graduate students to learn effective tools and strategies for pay negotiation. Apwonjo is hosting a bake sale every Monday through April 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center lobby. Money raised will help support art-therapy classes for former child soldiers in war-affected communities in Uganda. The artwork is exhibited nationally to raise funds for clean, fresh drinking water in these communities and to encourage international dialogue and education. More information: Caitlin Trotter.

The Sigma Tau Delta English honor society is hosting a book drive to raise funds to help children affected by war in Uganda. A Dodgeball for Babies tournament will be held Feb. 26, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Student Recreation Center. The registration deadline is Feb. 24. Cost is $25 per team, with five players minimum on each team. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places and for most creative uniform. An interfaith comedy show will be held Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ferguson Student Center Theater. The show will feature Azhar Usman, an American-Muslim comedian; the Rev. Susan Sparks, America’s only Christian female comedian with a pulpit; and Rabbi Bob Alper, the only practicing Jewish clergyman doing stand-up comedy. The event is free and open to all UA students, faculty and staff as well as the Tuscaloosa community. Tickets can be reserved and printed online at http://crimsonartstickets.com. A ticket is required for entry. Attendees are also invited to a meet-and-greet with the comedians after the show.
