The Cultivate Peer Mentors program is accepting applications for fall 2011. Cultivate mentors are campus leaders matched with Freshman Learning Communities and Compass courses. Mentors assist freshmen with their transition to campus. Mentors are selected from a variety of academic disciplines, backgrounds and campus experiences. Current freshmen, sophomores and juniors can apply. Training occurs during the spring semester; selected students will serve as mentors in the fall semester. Mentors will also have the opportunity to gain course credit and community service hours. The deadline to return applications is Feb. 8. Students who want to vote in the Feb. 22 referendum on Sunday alcohol sales in the city of Tuscaloosa have until Feb. 11 to register to vote or change their voting status. Only residents of the city of Tuscaloosa will be able to vote in the referendum. Anyone wishing to register to vote must complete a voter’s registration form to be delivered to the Tuscaloosa County Board of Registrars Office at the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse Annex by Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. Voting registration forms can also be obtained at the Student Government Association Office in 231 Ferguson Student Center. Law requires that a person must live in the county and in the municipal district 30 days before the election date. Proof, such as a driver’s license, will be required when registering. UA is one of 20 colleges from across the nation and Jamaica that will host “Elect Her: Campus Women Win,” a unique program that teaches women how to run for campus-based elective office. The Women’s Resource Center is seeking student writers to help with the spring 2011 edition of Our Voice newsletter. Bama Dining announces $5 Fridays. Every other Friday, anyone can purchase an all-you-can-eat lunch for $5 at Burke, Lakeside or Fresh Food if payment is made with cash, credit card, Bama Cash or Dining Dollars. The next $5 Friday is Feb. 4. Bama Dining also announces that Subway is now open in the Ferguson Student Center food court.

Students can visit the Student Health Center to receive flu vaccinations. The center has recently treated a few cases of the flu. More information: David Wilkins at 348-0108.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The Office of Greek Affairs will host the National Pan-Hellenic Council makeup convocation on Feb. 4 from noon-1 p.m. in Lloyd Hall. This session is mandatory for any student who wishes to participate in the membership intake process for any of the eight NPHC organizations in spring 2011. This session is designed for anyone who did not attend the original convocation on Jan. 19 and will serve as the only makeup session for spring 2011. More information: 348-2693.

The Student Government Association will host a date auction at the north end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium on Feb. 16 to raise money for the new SGA Scholarship Endowment Fund. The auction will feature students from various campus organizations, including football players, SGA officers and Greek organizations. Attendees may also win a date with the dean of their colleges. The Career Center will offer five-minute résumé critiques at 336 Ferguson Student Center on Feb. 9-10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. More information: Jonathan Hurt.

MathWorks will present a free MATLAB seminar on Feb. 9 in 205 Gorgas Library. Eric Johnson, MathWorks application engineer, will conduct two sessions, one beginning at 9 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. The first session will be an introduction to MATLAB; the second session will cover the more advanced topics of speeding up applications and parallel computing with MATLAB. Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and columnist for The New York Times, Thomas Friedman, will visit campus on Feb. 22. Friedman is also the author of “The World is Flat” and “Hot, Flat, and Crowded.” Friedman will address students from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Theater. He will also speak at 7 p.m. at the Bryant Conference Center’s Sellers Auditorium. The evening speech is open to the general public. More information: Wesley Vaughn.

Entries for the fifth annual book-collecting contest, co-sponsored by UA Libraries and the Alabama Center for the Book, are due on March 25 by 5 p.m. More information: http://www.lib.ua.edu/mystuff.

University Programs will host “Hot Topics: Social Media vs. Real Life” on Feb. 8 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center game room. Students are invited to discuss how social media affects their lives. Free food will be available. More information: Dara Arbuthnot.

The Eating Disorder Strategic Health Team will host its annual “Fashion Rocks and So Does My Body” event on Feb. 24 in the Ferguson Student Center ballroom. The event represents a diverse group of models, who exemplify beauty in all shapes and sizes. The event is held in conjunction with Eating Disorders Awareness Week and Body Appreciation Week. Students interested in participating in the fashion show or other parts of the awareness and appreciation week should e-mail the Department of Health Promotion and Wellness at health@ua.edu.

Students can volunteer with Habitat for Humanity for the Feb. 5 Unity Build by registering on Service Learning Pro before Feb. 2. Transportation will be provided. Participants will leave campus at 10 a.m. and return by 5 p.m. More information: Charlotte Brown at uahungerandhomelessness@gmail.com.

The Student Recreation Center will host a Polar Bear Plunge benefit on Feb. 12 at the outdoor pool complex. Cost is $5 for early registration and $10 on the day of the event. Heated locker rooms and showers are provided on-site, as well as hot chocolate for all participants. The first 50 individuals to register will receive a free coffee mug. UA Sports Clubs and Housing and Residential Communities will host the Holiday Hustle 5K Race on March 5 at 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help with checkpoints, water stations, registration tables, timing, running and calling. Contact uasportclubs@gmail.com if interested.

Alpha Omicron Pi sorority will host a 5K “Run for Roses” benefit at the AOII house on March 5 at 11 a.m. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Registration per runner is $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. Registration includes a T-shirt and a meal. Contact Rachel Wilkins to participate.
