UA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team to Get Championship Rings

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team will receive their rings for winning a second, consecutive National Championship on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Student Recreation Center.

The ring ceremony will take place at approximately 7:30 p.m. during halftime of the UA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team’s game against the University of South Alabama.

After defeating the University of Illinois in April, the Alabama women’s team won the 2010 national title. The women completed the season with a record of 37 wins and three losses, maintaining its undefeated record against women’s teams for the second season in a row and losing only to men’s teams. Including wins from this year, the UA women have won 63 games in a row against other women’s teams. Their last loss to a women’s team took place at the final game of the 2008 National Championship.

In addition to their outstanding performance on the basketball court, the women’s team also performs well academically. The team has a combined GPA of 3.73, and 4 team members have a 4.0 GPA.

The Alabama Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team will face the Canadian National Team at the UA Recreation Center on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m.

UA is one of 12 universities in the country that sponsors wheelchair athletics. Currently in its eighth season, the UA Wheelchair Athletics Program is the only program of its kind in the Southeastern United States.
