The Student Health Center will deliver flu shots to UA students at the following times and locations: Nov. 10, Rose Towers, noon-4 p.m.; and Nov. 17, Tutwiler Hall, noon-4 p.m. Cost is $20 and will be applied to a student’s University account. No payment is accepted on-site. SHC is also administering flu shots at the Student Health Center each Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and on Fridays, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Eligible students may request to purchase post-season football game tickets the last week of November and the first week of December. UA students interested in purchasing SEC Championship game tickets must add themselves to the waiting list between noon on Saturday, Nov. 27, and 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29. Students interested in purchasing bowl game tickets should add themselves to the ticket request list between noon on Monday, Dec. 6, and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Students will need to go to http://www.actcard.ua.edu to add themselves to these lists. Detailed information concerning the purchase of tickets for post-season football games will be sent via e-mail within the coming weeks.

As a reminder, classes have been cancelled for Thursday, Nov. 18, to accommodate the several thousand fans expected to be in town that day to attend the 6:30 p.m. football game against Georgia State University at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Classes will resume on Friday, Nov. 19.

UA paid tribute to Autherine Lucy Foster, James Hood and the late Vivian Malone Jones on Nov. 3 at the dedication of the Malone-Hood Plaza and Autherine Lucy Clock Tower at Foster Auditorium. The three African-American students’ enrollment represented UA’s first steps toward desegregation. Click here to view a replay of the ceremony.

UH 400-010 College’s Glass Ceiling is a new two-hour, service-learning course designed to teach high school students about the glass ceiling that exists in college access. UA students who register for the course will learn about current policy measures and perceptions regarding college access. Participation in Blueprints, a six-session program at Central High School, is a course requirement. Through Blueprints, UA students will mentor high school students through the college-access process, culminating with a campus visit for Central students and a Blueprints graduation. Literacy is the Edge has students available to speak to classes and campus organizations as part of LITE’s 2010 “It’s Never Too Late” to learn to read campaign. LITE is a student-advocacy group for literacy at UA. Two new dimensions for this year’s campaign are reaching adults in West Alabama who desire reading help and producing communication materials to assist the Bessemer Library recruit adult tutors and reach adults who need help. Bama Dining has partnered with the UA Parents Association and the Student Government Association to create the student-to-student meal-donation program. Students can donate unused meals that can be assigned immediately to students in need. Students with an active meal plan may donate one “guest meal” each semester. The dean of students will administer donated meals based on predetermined criteria from the Parents Association. Click here to donate.

Students can give their opinions on UA’s alcohol policies and other alcohol issues in a survey conducted by Teri Henley, instructor of advertising and public relations. The survey is voluntary and anonymous and contains no questions on personal alcohol use. Click here to take the survey, which runs through Nov. 16.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

This week’s football game against Mississippi State University will kick off at 6:15 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will be televised live on ESPN2. Visit Action Card Office, http://uagameday.com and http://www.rolltide.com for information about the game, including how to “Get in the Game,” the way student tickets are handled, entering the stadium (Gate 31) and parking.

The Collegiate Legislature will hold a general-interest meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at 301 Ferguson Student Center. The Collegiate Legislature conference allows student leaders to gain experience, practice debate and network with other students from the state of Alabama in a mock legislative session. The Office of the Dean of Students, University Union and the Canterbury Episcopal Student Forum will have an interfaith breakfast-for-dinner and facilitated discussion on the role of beliefs in our community. The event, God and Grits, is free and will be held on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. at 360 Ferguson Student Center. People of all beliefs or lack of beliefs are welcome. Greek Missions is hosting a jambalaya dinner to support its mission trip to Costa Rica. The dinner will be held on Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. at the Sigma Nu fraternity house. Tickets are $5. More information: Lindsay Leon at 251-510-2174 or Valerie Rodriguez at 225-354-9564.

The UA Relay for Life Committee will host its first fall kickoff on Nov. 15 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center game room. All who register at this time will have their $10 registration fee waived. All teams registered will be entered into a drawing for free prizes. All student organizations, fraternities and sororities, residence halls, academic departments and groups of friends may register a Relay for Life team. More information: Andres Pena.

Prints by current students and alumni of the department of art and art history are on exhibit in the Sella-Granata Art Gallery on the first floor of Woods Hall through Nov. 19. A reception and printing demonstration will be held in the gallery on Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will be able to pull prints from the available blocks. At the same time, the Combat Paper Project will host a text and image workshop upstairs in 206 Woods Hall. More information: Sarah Marshall at 348-1900.

Visit the Great American Smokeout booth in the Ferguson Student Center on Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn strategies for quitting smoking and helping others to do the same. Representatives from the Student Health Center, the center’s Department of Health Promotion and Wellness, UA’s Office of Health Promotion and Wellness, and University Recreation will answer questions. Students can earn community-service hours by participating in a letter campaign to fight childhood cancer on Nov. 16 from 6 p.m. to midnight in the Ferguson Student Center Ballroom. Participants will address pre-written letters to friends and family. Each person who writes 10 letters will gain entrance into the finale event, which features music, games and cancer-patient speakers. Those who write at least 25 letters will be eligible for prizes, such as an iPod, gift cards, book scholarships and a $1,000 scholarship. Dinner and T-shirts will be provided. The Office of the Dean of Students and the First Year Council are hosting a student tailgate for all freshmen and transfer students from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 18, the day of the Alabama football game against Georgia State University. The tailgate will be located in front of the Crimson Ride stop between Carmichael Hall and Bidgood Hall. Free food and drinks will be provided. More information: Blair James at 348-3326.

Dr. Jo Anne Engelbert, literary translator and educator, will speak at the first Alabama Modern Language Conference on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Heritage Room. Pi Beta Phi and the Alabama Army ROTC are sponsoring a 5K run, Victory Lap for Literacy, on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. Cost is $12 for early registration. On-site registration is $15 and takes place at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 20 at the ROTC building behind Gorgas Library. A T-shirt is included in the registration fee. The Department of Theatre and Dance’s outreach group will host a benefit concert, “Cabaret for Cans,” in Morgan Auditorium on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. in support of Beat Auburn Beat Hunger. Admission is three canned food items or $3. More information: Emmett Smith at 334-332-1005.

UA’s Exercise Physiology Club is collecting supplies for a local animal welfare organization. Donations may include bleach, paper towels, garbage bags, cat litter, Dawn dish detergent, or laundry detergent. Donations can be dropped off in the collection bin located in the lobby of Moore Hall.
