UA Social Work Student Named Nicol Volunteer Firefighter of the Year

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama student Robin Sullivan was named Volunteer Firefighter of the Year by the Nicol Fire Department at its recent awards ceremony.

After serving as a volunteer fire fighter for one year, Sullivan spent hundreds of hours fundraising and organizing for the department, according to Fire Chief Gaston Wilson Jr. She also made sure the department had enough money to take care of things in the department and to purchase equipment.

A native of Centreville, Sullivan is pursuing an undergraduate degree in the UA School of Social Work. Sullivan said she chose social work because of her passion to help others and is thankful to the School of Social Work for teaching her the skills she needs to serve the members of the community.

“The fire department has been part of my husband’s family for many years, and the department needs to continue growing to serve the needs of the community,” Sullivan said.  “My father in-law served as the fire chief for the department for 10 years until his death in 2008.”

Sullivan said that her husband and daughter are supportive of her, often giving up their time with her.  She added that she enjoys being in a position to help others and her family to understand the importance of the tasks she has performed with the department.

“Sullivan has built a legacy of trust and respect and her constant dedication and service have made the Nicol Fire Department a better place to work,” Wilson said.  “Because of Sullivan’s devotion to fundraising, she has earned the respect of her colleagues. That commitment has earned Sullivan the title of Volunteer Firefighter of the Year Award for 2010.”
