Former University of Alabama players who served in armed forces to be honored

Lionel W. “Red” Noonan…The former longtime Mobile County probate judge is being honored, along with 12 other University of Alabama players, during pre-game festivities at the Alabama-Mississippi State game. But the recognition isn’t for Noonan’s playing days. The former players are taking to the field for their service during World War II as part of Veterans Day ceremonies on campus…The event also coincides with the release of the book “When Winning Was Everything,” written by Delbert Reed. The book features 60 of the 325 former Tide players and coaches who served in the military. Thirteen of the former players died in action or in training…

Alabama football players take part in anti-illiteracy public service campaign (with video)

Universtiy of Alabama football players — including Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram — are encouraging students to fight illiteracy in Alabama through a television public service announcement to be aired as a part of the 2010 Literacy is the Edge campaign. The public service announcements will run through 2011and are aimed at raising awareness of illiteracy while helping recruit tutors for adults and children in west Alabama, and assistants for English as a second language programs. “As students at the University of Alabama we are afforded the opportunity to get an amazing education,” Alabama running back Mark Ingram said in a university news release. “The chance to become a tutor and help someone from our state learn to read is a great way to give back to a state that has done so much for me and my teammates.” Also taking part in the literacy program are quarterback Greg McElroy and linebacker Dont’a Hightower…

UA boasts two Rhodes finalists

Having a Rhodes scholar finalist who also happens to be the starting quarterback of the football team is certainly newsworthy, but the fact that the University has two Rhodes scholar finalists is an outstanding achievement in itself. In addition to Greg McElroy, Ynhi Thai, a senior majoring in chemical engineering, is also a Rhodes scholar finalist…While McElroy is competing in the Alabama, Florida and Tennessee district, Thai, who hails from Mississippi, is competing in the district that includes Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and South Carolina…Thai’s track record of achievements – she is a Goldwater Scholar and a member of the USA Today All-USA College Academic Second Team…She is a founding member of Engineers Without Borders, and organized a trip to Cambodia for two drinking water projects, as she is interested in water-borne diseases. She has also done extensive research in such topics as E. coli detection, cancer therapy and sleep disorders…

Students start smart phone repair business

When UA student Chris Koerner’s iPhone broke in May, he didn’t throw it away. He started a business. Koerner, a 23-year-old senior majoring in business management with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, teamed up with his friend and fellow University of Alabama student, Andrew Batteen, to open Phone Restore on 15th Street in September. The business, which will have its grand opening on Friday, mostly repairs smart phones. Koerner estimated 80 to 90 percent of its business involves broken iPhones…

Meal plan supplements available

Before the fall semester began, students could choose from various meal plan blocks that range from 50 meals to unlimited meals. For students running low on meal plans, Bama Dining offered the Thrifty 20 option beginning in October…Kelsey Faust, marketing coordinator of Bama Dining, said in an e-mailed statement that they decided to offer a 20 meal-option when Bama Dining realized approximately how many additional meals students need during this time of year. “We selected 20 meals because essentially the Thrifty 20 plan is considered a meal plan add on for when students are running low on their current meal plan,” she said. “Therefore, we came up with the 20 block after looking at previous years’ numbers to figure out a number of meals that will be enough to get students through the rest of the school semester.”…

Student summits Kilimanjaro

…In July of the previous summer, Austin, a junior majoring in finance, trekked with his older brother Matt to the summit of the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. Located in Tanzania, Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 19,298 feet above sea level…
