Applications are being accepted for the Parent Ambassador 2011 team. Apply at http://parents.ua.edu. Applications are due in 230 Ferguson Student Center by 5 p.m. on Oct. 8. More information: Jessica Criswell.

Applications for the 2011 Avanti Team are available at http://www.orientation.ua.edu/avanti. The Avanti Team supports the recruitment objectives of the University through service with Bama Bound Orientation and other special programs throughout the academic year. To keep students informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University uses UA Alerts to simultaneously send voice calls and text messages to cell phones and e-mails to myBama and Crimson e-mail accounts. In an emergency, an e-mail will be sent to a student’s myBama account. Students should make sure that their contact information on myBama is updated. Students who do not check their myBama e-mail accounts need to turn on e-mail forwarding. Students can find directions for doing this under the “Student Tab” on myBama. To view and make changes to their information online, students can log into their myBama accounts at http://mybama.ua.edu. Students can create “LessThanUThink” videos for a chance to win flip cameras for each of their team members and a week’s worth of 30-second TV spots during the following shows: “Seinfeld,” “Jersey Shore,” “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” “Chelsea Lately” and “Sports Center.” Videos must be submitted by Oct. 11. Bama Dining is offering students a chance to win a 3D Blu-ray disc player with Wi-Fi or a $50 gift card for participating in a brief online survey until Oct. 22. Responses are confidential. Click here to begin the survey.

Registration closes Oct. 15 for undergraduate students to study in Havana, Cuba, in spring 2011. Students can earn 12-15 semester hours. Minimal Spanish is required. The study includes field experiences, round-table discussions with Cuban citizens and historical excursions. More information: Dr. Michael Schnepf.

The High Tide Club provides an exciting and engaging game-day experience for students attending Alabama home football games. The bottom of the upper deck of the south end zone features reserved seats for High Tide Club members. Benefits include free T-shirts and concession giveaways throughout the season, as well as an opportunity to receive book scholarships. Easier entrance into the stadium will be available at Gate 30. HelpDesk is now IT Service Desk, fully staffed with professionals and students who are receiving enhanced training and education on core IT services. IT Service Desk now provides 24-hour phone support and has new contact information: 348-5555 or itsd@ua.edu.

Anderson Society Homecoming T-Shirts are $10, payable by cash or check. T-shirts are available at a table in the Ferguson Center from Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You may also purchase T-shirts directly from Anderson Society members. The sale ends Oct. 20. The Anderson Society is a senior leadership honorary that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to UA.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The Student Health and Wellness Fair will be held Oct. 6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the University Union Plaza and the University Supply Store lobby. The fair will offer physical health services, such as flu vaccines, screenings and health information, as well as activities and information to improve mental, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental areas of health and well-being. The University Supply Store at Tutwiler Hall will hold a Bama Sideline Apparel Sale Oct. 7, 6 a.m.–4 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will provide financial assistance for graduate fellowships and the Paul W. Bryant Museum. The sale features former Crimson Tide quarterback Jay Barker, Al del Grecco and Tony Kurre of “The Opening Drive” broadcasting live, 6-10 a.m., on WJOX 94.5 FM and “The Deuce” WDGM 99.1 FM.

A Disney College Program representative will be on campus Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. and Oct 7 at 5 p.m. in 301 Ferguson Student Center. Click here for more information about internship opportunities with the Disney College Program.

The opening reception for “INVASION — Representations of Cancer: Combining Medical and Military Metaphors” by Patricia Davis will be Oct. 7, 7-8:30 p.m., in the Ferguson Student Center Art Gallery. This is Davis’ first solo exhibition. She is a McNair Scholar who is majoring in studio art. The exhibit runs through Oct. 29.

Homecoming week kicks off Oct. 10 and culminates Oct. 16 with the football game against the University of Mississippi. This year’s theme is “Share the Pride, Celebrate the Tide.” Visit http://homecoming.ua.edu for more information.

The Ferguson Student Center kicks off its fall movie series with “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” at 8 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Ferguson Center Plaza. Free popcorn and refreshments will be available. Bring chairs and blankets. In the event of rain, the movie will be shown in the Ferguson Center Theater. The Ferguson Center and SGA are hosting the Homecoming comedy show featuring Eddie Ifft Monday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. Ifft has been featured on Comedy Central, BET and “Chelsea Lately.”

The annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive kicks off on Oct. 11. Students can stop by the Ferguson Center Plaza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to donate and sample food from local restaurants. The event includes a pie-throwing contest to raise money. Contestants include the Student Government Association president and the Crimson White editor. The contestant whose donation jar contains the most money at the end of the kickoff will receive a pie to the face Oct. 13 at the Plaza. The highest donor will throw the pie. Other events include a step show, an appearance by Big Al and music. The food drive ends Nov. 22. UA won last year’s drive.

The Big Pink Volleyball Tournament, a philanthropic event co-sponsored by University Recreation and the Women’s Resource Center, will be Oct. 10 at noon at the Student Recreation Center. Students may contribute by participating on a team, purchasing a T-shirt or making a donation at the Student Recreation Center. Click here for more information.

The Breast Cancer Honor and Remembrance Tree project has started. Students can write messages to breast cancer patients or survivors on pink ribbon ornaments during October at the following locations: Ferguson Student Center, Women’s Resource Center, Capstone Village or Student Health Center. A suicide prevention and awareness walk will be held Oct. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration begins at 1 p.m. at the Ferguson Student Center Plaza. A barbecue is scheduled at the Lambda Chi Alpha house following the walk. Event T-shirts are available for purchase through the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness or Gamma chapters. The HopeLine Project will run through the end of October as part of Dating/Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The UA community is asked to donate old cell phones that will be refurbished and given to victims of domestic violence for making life-saving calls. Drop-off locations include the Women’s Resource Center, 230 Ferguson Student Center, 104 Manly Hall, Rose Towers and Tutwiler Hall. More information: Maria Perez-Fisher at 348-5040.

Housing and Residential Communities will host an Off-Campus Housing Fair Oct. 20, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., on the main floor of the Ferguson Student Center. Students can learn about the variety of rental properties and which off-campus housing options are available for next year. More information: Julie Elmore at jelmore@sa.ua.edu.

The Ferguson Student Center will host the 2010 Association of College Unions International Region 6 Conference Oct. 22-24. All students are invited to participate. This year’s conference will focus on making connections and building community through technology. The conference will feature keynote speakers Ed Cabellon, Campus Center director at Bridgewater State University, and Stephen Foster Black, director of UA’s Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility. Registration is $150. A one-day registration of $75 is available for graduate and undergraduate students to attend Oct. 23. Register at http://region6.acui.org.
