University of Alabama sets Homecoming Week theme, events

The University of Alabama tradition of Homecoming Week will have a theme of “Share the Pride, Celebrate the Tide!” this year with campus events Sunday, Oct. 10 through Saturday, Oct. 16, university officials announced. The annual Homecoming Pep Rally and Bonfire will be held on the Quad at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, when the 2010 homecoming queen will be announced. The Homecoming Parade will take place Saturday, Oct. 16, time to be announced, from downtown Tuscaloosa to the UA campus. Tyrone Prothro, former University of Alabama wide receiver, will be parade grand marshal…

Alabama news links: Shaun Alexander to sign books at Bryant Museum

Former University of Alabama football star and 3-time NFL Pro Bowl selection Shaun Alexander will be at the Paul W. Bryant Museum on the UA campus at 2 p.m. Saturday to sign copies of his new book “The Walk.”…Copies of the book will be available at the University Supply Store on Friday and at the book signing, according to university officials.

A hub for local artists

…The new art collective is in a renovated Victorian home in downtown Tuscaloosa. Started in September by University of Alabama graduate students Siepser and Allison Milham, Alabama Art Kitchen brings together artists of different backgrounds and levels of experience. The artists share studio space and equipment and also host exhibitions, classes and workshops for the community at large. “We share tools and ideas,” Milham said. “It’s a group of artists who are sharing space to make art and provide a support network.” The two graduate students, both in UA’s book arts program, opened the Alabama Art Kitchen with limited equipment and supplies. But as word spread, other artists joined the collective and donated their talents, time and equipment. Siepser said that classes offered at Alabama Art Kitchen will include letterpress printing, metal-smithing, screen-printing, papermaking, sewing, photography, music, hand spinning, fiber and dye workshops, book binding, tanning and taxidermy, fermentation, painting, figure drawing, bone tool and object carving.

Students offer free tailgates

The Honors College Assembly and LessThanUThink, a campaign started by University students to raise awareness about the effects of alcohol, will host tailgating parties for the Crimson Tide’s game against Florida Saturday. The HCA tailgate will be in front of Nott Hall on the Quad, said Michael Forst, director of student life for the HCA. “We’ll have free food and drinks, we’ll have a TV set up,” Forst said. “We’ll have all the normal tailgating games.”…The Rising Tide Student Tailgate will be sponsored by LessThanUThink, and their tent will be located near Carmichael Hall at the edge of the Quad. It begins three hours prior to kickoff and offers free food, drinks and giveaways, a UA press release said…

Sustained Dialogue brings diverse students together

To overcome constrictions on communication at UA, Sustained Dialogue, a program initiated by Crossroads Community Center in 2006, invites students from all corners of campus to participate in weekly discussions comprised of individuals who hail from dissonant backgrounds and vantage points. Beverly Hawk, director of Crossroads Community Center, said Sustained Dialogue provokes conversation among students who would most likely never cross paths. “In life, we don’t spend a lot of time with the people we disagree with,” Hawk said. “But in Sustained Dialogue, you’re stuck with each other… You meet people you will not otherwise get to know.”…Hawk said the members of Sustained Dialogue plan to begin their group discussions next week, and if students still wish to apply for a membership in the program, an application can be found near the bottom of the Crossroads Community Center website at crossroads.ua.edu…

Capstone helps veterans adjust

The University celebrated the launch of a program for student veterans last week with a visit from author and founder of the National Veterans Foundation, Floyd Meshad.  The Veterans Education and Transition Support program was created to help veterans adjust to student life, including offering help with unresolved problems relating to traumatic combat experiences, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. “Our passion for this program is authentic. This is not just another UA-sponsored program, this is about serving our veterans,” Vice President of Community Affairs Samory Pruitt said at the VETS reception…

UA alumni to host riverboat cruises

The Tuscaloosa County University of Alabama alumni chapter will host riverboat cruises at 6 and 7:30 tonight. Cost is $30 per person and includes two drink tickets, a buffet, door prizes and cash bar. Proceeds benefit the organization’s scholarship fund. Big Al, UA cheerleaders, Miss University of Alabama and other guests will be on hand. National championship merchandise will also be on sale, with a percentage of sales going to the scholarship fund…
