ANNOUNCEMENTS

UA students with 42 UA earned hours or below who requested South Carolina game tickets now have an opportunity to purchase one ticket for the Alabama vs. South Carolina game in Columbia, S.C. The deadline to order is Thursday, Sept. 30.  Please click here to begin your purchase.  Tickets are $55 each and there is a limit of one ticket per student.  Students that purchase and receive a ticket may pick up their ticket at the Alabama Ticket Office beginning Monday, Oct. 4.  The ability to purchase a ticket does not guarantee you will receive one.  Should orders exceed tickets available, orders will be filled by UA earned credit hour.

The Ferguson Student Center will close at 5 p.m. on Sept. 30 due to a special event. The building will reopen at 7 a.m. on Oct. 1. The following dining facilities will be open on the evening of Sept. 30: Burke Hall, 7 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; Bryant Sports Grill, 4:30 p.m.-8 p.m.; Lakeside Dining, 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; Buffalo Phil’s at Burke Hall, 11 a.m. (Sept. 30)-1 a.m. (Oct. 1); Science and Engineering Complex, 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m.; Bidgood Bistro, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.; Java City in Gorgas Library, 7:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m.; Buffalo Phil’s at Lakeside, 5 p.m. (Sept. 30)-2 a.m. (Oct. 1); and Stewart’s Corner, 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m.

The homecoming registration deadline has been extended to Sept. 29. This year’s theme is “Share the Pride, Celebrate the Tide.” Register online at http://homecoming.ua.edu. More information: Chad Clark or Erica Floyd.

The High Tide Club provides an exciting and engaging game-day experience for students attending Alabama home football games. The bottom of the upper deck of the south end zone features reserved seats for High Tide Club members. Benefits include free T-shirts and concession giveaways throughout the season, as well as an opportunity to receive book scholarships. Easier entrance into the stadium will be available at Gate 30. Students can join the High Tide Club for $10, and the membership fee will be charged to their student accounts. More information: http://sga.ua.edu/hightide.cfm.

Following are some helpful reminders for students who attend football games at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Be aware of the ticket package you have on your Action Card. Crossing over between the upper deck and the lower bowl of the student section is not allowed. Arrive early for each game for easier access. More information: “Get in the Game.”

Fans attending Quad events prior to each home football game are encouraged to drop off game-day recyclables at a tent east of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. Plastic, aluminum and cardboard will be accepted at the tent. Recycling tent operation for the game against the University of Florida will be noon-6 p.m. on Oct. 2. UA employees will hand out recycling bags to individual groups tailgating on the Quad so that cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic cups, food wrappers and other types of plastics, including ice bags, can be recycled.

Applications are being accepted for the Parent Ambassador 2011 team. Apply at http://parents.ua.edu. Applications are due in 230 Ferguson Student Center by 5 p.m. on Oct. 8. More information: Jessica Criswell.

Applications for the 2011 Avanti Team are available at http://www.orientation.ua.edu/avanti. The Avanti Team supports the recruitment objectives of the University through service with Bama Bound Orientation and other special programs throughout the academic year. A form is available online that allows students to enter or update their preferred name listing. Students can login to myBama, go to the Student tab, click on the Personal Information folder in the Banner Self-Service box, click on the Update Preferred Name link and enter their preferred name.

The Student Government Association’s Ideas to Action committee encourages students to submit their ideas for campus events, programs and reform through the SGA website. Ideas to Action is dedicated to researching students’ ideas and taking the necessary steps to put them into action. More information: Ross Mullins.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

This week’s football game against the University of Florida will kick off at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will be televised live on CBS. Visit Action Card Office, http://uagameday.com and http://www.rolltide.com for information about the game, including how to “Get in the Game,” the way student tickets are handled, entering the stadium (Gate 31) and parking.

The Student Government Association and UA Transportation Services will sponsor a PEERS Texting and Driving Awareness Simulation in the Ferguson Center Plaza on Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to be placed in a simulator to see how distractions such as texting and using MP3 players affect driving.

Provost Judy Bonner and Vice Provost Mark Nelson invite students to bring their lunches and join them for open-ended discussions. The informal meetings will be held Oct. 4 and Nov. 10 at noon in 358 Ferguson Student Center (Sparkman Room).

The Student Health and Wellness Fair will be held Oct. 6 at the University Union plaza and the University Supply Store lobby. The fair will offer physical health services, such as flu vaccines, screenings and health information, as well as activities and information to improve mental, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental areas of health and well-being. Housing and Residential Communities will host an Off-Campus Housing Fair on Oct. 20 on the main floor of the Ferguson Student Center. Student golfers can compete for a chance to go to Las Vegas, Nev. UA’s Play Golf America University Golf Tournament will be held on Oct. 5 at Ol’ Colony Golf Complex. Registration will be 10-11:50 a.m. and will be followed by a shotgun start at noon. The two-person scramble will include three flights: UA students, 32 teams; UA faculty and staff, 15 teams; and UA alumni and the community, 15 teams. The winning student team will represent UA at the National Collegiate Golf Championship in Las Vegas in November. Airplane fare, hotel expenses and entry fee for the winning team will be paid by a PGAU grant allocated to UA. Only recreational student golfers are eligible for the main prize and other prizes for the student flight. Professional golfers and students participating on NCAA teams are not eligible. Alabama Sen. Vivian Figures will be the guest speaker for the Women’s Political Initiative lecture series Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center ballroom. More information: Grant Cochran at 348-6122.

The Ferguson Student Center will host the 2010 Association of College Unions International Region 6 Conference Oct. 22-24. All students are invited to participate. This year’s conference will focus on making connections and building community through technology. The conference will feature keynote speakers Ed Cabellon, Campus Center director at Bridgewater State University, and Stephen Foster Black, director of UA’s Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility. Registration is $150. A one-day registration of $75 is available for graduate and undergraduate students to attend Oct. 23. Register at http://region6.acui.org.

The Big Pink Volleyball Tournament, a philanthropic event co-sponsored by University Recreation and the Women’s Resource Center, will be Oct. 10 at noon at the Student Recreation Center. Students may contribute by participating on a team, purchasing a T-shirt or making a donation at the Student Recreation Center. A suicide prevention and awareness walk will be held Oct. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration begins at 1 p.m. at the Ferguson Student Center Plaza. A barbecue is scheduled at the Lambda Chi Alpha house following the walk. More information: Lee Keyes at 348-3863.
