Artist paints murals at Health Center

…The artist, Stephen Ardovino, began painting each of the murals in the SHC, sports clinic and pediatrics ward five years ago. “Art is a gift,” he wrote on his website, stephenardovino.com. “I feel blessed to have the ability to convey my perception to the viewer with paint and canvas.”…

Campus gallery shows student photos

…Beginning today, University of Alabama’s New Gallery will be showing photographs from Beale’s summer project, called “Strangers.” “The exhibit is a compilation of my summer endeavors,” Beale said. Throughout the past summer, Beale traveled throughout the Northeast working on farms, usually in two-week intervals, in exchange for meals and a bed…The local food movement and sustainable agriculture drove Beale’s journey, which took her as far north as Canada and introduced her to a range of lifestyles and ways of living off the land. Beale kept up a blog throughout the summer as part of her project. The blog included pictures, stories and updates on her travels, as well as her multiple projects…Joe Parmer, a senior in New College, is one of the co-curators of New Gallery, along with Alex Campisi. “[New Gallery is] art and community space run by New College, which aims to showcase the creative diversity of the New College student body,” Parmer said…

Tuscaloosa native wins Bridgestone America annual contest

For UA student Henry Busby, a visit to the junkyard and a passion for film yielded a new set of tires and $5,000. Drinking and driving, texting behind the wheel and talking on the phone are all issues addressed in the video by Busby, a junior majoring in telecommunications and film, who won the Bridgestone Teen Driver Contest…Busby, a Tuscaloosa native, won a $5,000 scholarship as well as a set of Bridgestone tires for his 26 second video that showcases the impact behind bad driving habits. “Henry’s video was well done technically. It has a really strong message that was effective in such a short period of time,” Angela Patterson-Sikes, digital media coordinator for Bridgestone, said. “The purpose of this contest is for teens to be able to teach other teens and this gives them the ability to do that,” she said…

Stimulus saves 34 jobs at JSU

… Ahmad Ijaz, director of economic forecasting at the Center for Business & Economic Research at the University of Alabama, said that despite talk of the stimulus package creating new jobs, the stimulus is more likely to save jobs like those at JSU. “It really did not create any jobs. If it did anything, it saved jobs,” Ijaz said. “It has helped them retain some people, but it was never meant to create jobs because government spending really does not create any jobs.”…
