UA Chapter of Pi Beta Phi Wins National Awards

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama chapter of Pi Beta Phi Sorority has received two national awards, including the Silver Slipper Award for most outstanding vice president of finance and an Honorable Mention for Most Outstanding New Member Programming.

Katy Daniels, a senior majoring in accounting from Columbia, Tenn., received this year’s Silver Slipper Award. Given to the vice president of finance that shows an exceptional understanding of financial responsibility in her chapter, the award is one of the highest honors from Pi Beta Phi.

Currently in her second term as vice president of finance, Daniels manages a budget for the UA chapter of Pi Beta Phi. Critical thinking and decision making play a major role in her oversight of the group’s financial obligations. During her first term as vice president of finance, Daniels held a meeting for all new members to explain the financial commitment of Pi Beta Phi and also sent packets to their parents to help them understand the commitment as well. She also maintained a close relationship with the house director to find helpful ways to make chapter spending more efficient.

The Honorable Mention for Most Outstanding New Member Programming was awarded to Pi Beta Phi because of its quality programs and initiatives targeted toward new members. Among the programs and initiatives were the “Pi Phiesta,” “Sorting Halo Ceremony,” “Pledge Dessert” and “POD” groups.

Pi Beta Phi also created an individualized mentoring program for new members who were struggling in their classes. With study hall and tutoring, the final grades of new members improved from their grades at midterm.
